Default Drive Shaft Question

Hey Guys,

I know there is a ton of great info on here about these things...and I previously owned an 03 that I put a TW shaft on.

I bought an 04 last month and was going through the 60K service/fluid changes etc...went to look at the DS, it looks stock and original (no marking around the bolts). I kept the original DS from my 03 and yesterday when i compared the two, I noticed that there are no zerc (sp?) fittings anywhere on the 04 shaft. On my 03 shaft, there is one on the front U-joint and one on the DS, can't tell if there is one on the Double Cardon, would it be on the u joint or somewhere else?

Hoping i don't need to by another one and just use the one from my 03 (if it is infact a rebuilt one). I can post pics if needed tonight when i get home.

as always thanks for the help...

if you don't see fittings in the double Cardon joint you can just rebuild the one you have and swap them out. They are the same size unlike the 99-02

You should be able to see the zerks on any rebuilt DS if in fact it was rebuilt with the right u-joints. if you do not see the zerks I would go get a new DS,either rebuild yours or but new again. The factory 03 is NOT going to have the zerks. and will need to be replaced.

Can I pull my front DS off (04) and drive it around without doing any damage? I figured I can rebuild mine at my leisure.

OK enough said, i don't want to risk it. I will try to rebuild the 03 DS as it already has zerks on the shaft and the front ujoint. the 04 has none anywhere so will hopefully save a little bit of money.

What kind fo grease do you guys use for the DS?

Thanks

Agreed. Any high Temp will suffice. I greae every 3k at oil changes.

I just installed TF steering bars w/ greasable rod ends. I'm gonna be a greasing machine.

So, can I pull the front drive shaft off and drive the truck without doing damage?

You may cause damage, but there is a good chance you won't if everything else in your rear drivetrain is well maintained.

For the cost of a u-joint ($14), I'd replace the diff end joint also. Unless you know for a fact it was lubed, and lubed correctly, every 3,000 miles.
