Default Drive or Ship?

That is the question. A good friend of mine is giving me a deal on his disco that I cannot turn down. Some details of the truck include
- 2” lift with new shocks, springs ect
- All terrain Tires
- Dif guards
- Some other off road goodies
He has also spent countless hours going through the entire truck replacing bushings, oil lines, pivot seals and ton of other stuff that I cannot even begin to list
Basically the truck is in great running shape except for some sort of tick. He said the ticking increases with engine speed and you only hear it when it is hot.

So, he needs the truck gone (from Houston) before mid Dec. I was going to ship it but it looks like that will cost over $700 so I would like to drive it home (from Richmond VA). Unfortunately he does not have time to deal with looking into the problem. Oh, I should mention that he put really thick diesel oil in about the same time this tick started.

If I drive it home, I am going to just go straight to a jiffy lube (or something similar) and have them change the oil and then hit the road.

My questions are as follows.
What could the tick be?
Would it be bad to drive it 1300 miles with the tick?
Does anyone know a good auto shipper that might ship for $500?

don't drive it, and you will spend $250 in gas to get from houston to richmond if the truck is running at its best, which you already said it isn't. What year is the truck, whats the mileage? has the front drive shaft been rebuilt?

I think I would have it shipped. Theres a lot of car haulers on the internet i would check around. Im sure you should be able to find a truck line to haul it for around 5-600$. Plus like hilltopper says youll spend $250 in gas and plus a plane ticket. No use ruining a motor for that much.

specialty mobile did exactly what they said they would do.

tip: try your best to get your rover as near the semi cab as possible. that way they're not moving your truck during the trip.

the reputable companies probably cost a few more bucks than the shady ones because the reputable ones have insurance, etc.. you get what you pay for.
