Default drive train vibration

Recently acquired a 2002 Discovery 2. I noticed today that the drive train has a vibration. I got under it and the front drive shaft has a small amount of play. could this be the problem?

Can a Drive shaft be balanced by a machine shop?

If it has any play = U-Joints are about to go out with a big BANG. Either get the 200.00 front driveshaft from Lucky8 or the 125.00-150.00 units off of Ebay with zerk fittings on all 3 U-Joints.

If you ignore a failing driveshaft you could very easily make a massive hole in your transmission killing it for sure along with your exhaust, cats, a huge hole in the floor, and I’ve even seen some transfer cases blown free of the transmission. Just depends on how fast your driving when it lets go especially if you still have the OEM frame support bar installed directly under it which just means if it breaks it bounces off of that vs dropping to the ground.

Drain train vibrations are a process of elimination. Very tough at time to diagnose. If you suspect an item is worn or out of balance, replacement or repair is your only option. Sure, the first thing you fix may not cure the problem...but it is part of the process of elimination. If you are feeling movement in the joints of the drive shaft, just replace.

If the vehicle has been sitting for a long time, even radial tires will get flat spots. And if the tires are old, another reason for the to be replaced.

Changing all draintrain fluids would be another good place to investigate. Looking for any unusual materials in drained fluids.

Wheel bearing hubs, also could be the issue.

I will start with changing out the DS. Hope that takes care of it.

I'm in a similar hunt. New tires and rotors all around and assumed a new front shaft would get rid of mine but nope.

OK, I also detect some lateral movement in the dif and the TC.at the DS connections No oil leakage. What should I suspect if anything?

Some movement is normal, there is a preset amount of backlash in the gear set (ring and pinion) and the gears within the transfer case. It's kind of one of those "feel" things, you know the difference between normal and Abby-normal when you feel it. I'd say, up to a 1/2 inch movement back and forth would be acceptable. Also, when this amount of backlash becomes greater, you usually get a high pitch whining noise...when you let off the gas pedal at speed.

Brian.
