Default driver side catalytic converter rattling

So after driving thru some water, the driver side cat sounds like it has an exhaust leak but goes away after 2k rpm. Checked under neath and couldnt find any holes. I live in california and have to abide by the smog *****. Spending 500+ dollars on a y pipe exhaust is not an option. Does anybody know of a 50 state legal cat that I can weld in? Should I drill some holes to relieve the pressure for now? This is a daily driver.

Before you spend alot of money, check your heatshields. They will tend to rattle and are especially prone to kind of resonate at certain engine rpm's. Just my opinion but worth checking out.

If your heat shields are OK, then go to your local muffler shop and see what, State legal cats he has for sale.
You might also find out what killed the cat, it wasn't the water, and if not found and fixed, it will happen again.

My '99 D2 did this, a little JB weld and all was well again.

Not if the cat has started to melt down.

I wouldn't drive it any more. Your cat , having melted down has most likely broken up and blown down and into your muffler. Now you may be looking for 2 cats and a muffler.

yeah i figured that much, getting it towed when shes off later tonight. At least Ill be able use the flowmaster I have lying on the side of the house to use.

Last time I looked at getting a new cat installed in another vehicle the muffler shop told me some BS you have to get it done at a qualified mechanic because of smog police and paperwork required from mechanic, etc. Not sure If I believe him, interesting though since you the consumer can not buy any cat in the state of california. But yet they sell cats to all other states just not yours and those are suppose to be OEM replacements. So makes you think where did the cat I have on the car come from? Sounds like smog bs to me. Ok Im done with my rant just hate california smog police. lol

Not the first time a/or some fault codes haven't shown up.
If you have that much back pressure, get it to a good muffler shop and replace both cats and probably your muffler if the cat let loose. Then you might ought to find out what killed that cat so it doesn't happen to the new ones.
