Exclamation No fluid in TC

So I pulled the plug on the transfer case and hardly anything came out.. Just enough fluid, pitch black and gummed up to cover the bottom of a small bucket I put underneath... The Plug was caked with black sludge...

Found no metal shavings on the bottom drain plug, but I did find 2 very small shavings on the magnetic fill plug..

In the picture, I have already wiped most of the sludge off to look at it. Thats about 20% of what was originallys caked on there...

I'm going to fill it up and pray I haven't destroyed it... What type is best for the warm weather of the south, and can I use teflon tape to seal the drain plug??

I switched my transfer case over to 85w-140. You can also just run 85w-90.

Did you ever get a hot transmission light on the dash??? You should have, maybe I need to go back and read your earlier threads..

OE Gear Oil is 75W-90 & 85W-90 is fine. 75W-140 works well too.

I'm NOT a fan of using Teflon tape to seal the drain plug.
I only use Permatex 59214 (small tube) or 59235 (larger) and you can get it at any auto parts store. Works great.

You "might" be able to save the TC with fluid, but with the issues you described I'd be sourcing a replacement just in case. I'd go with 85/140w for your situation as it apparently has a pretty bad leak somewherw to be that low on fluid.

Add it & take it for a test drive, but I'm pretty sure some bearings have been without proper lubrication for a while now.

Yes that light started going off on me on the highway last week.. Only on deceleration from highway speeds..

Fluids are filled and no metal shavings on the drain plug, so hopefully its not lost...

Take a test drive & report back.

Fluid change to the TC changed nothing.. It's almost like a constant whinning noise now.. Only heard one really loud chirp noise.. no grinding noise that I could tell

I think its the Transmission fluid.. will let it cool off first and drain it...

If I drain the trans, how much should come out?? not all of it obviously becuase of whats in the Torque Converter wont drain out.. So how much should I expect to see??

Thanks

Trainsmission drained out over a full gallon, or just over 4 quarts... It had a steady stream all the way till the end...

So i drained and filled the TC
the transmission was not low
I drained and replaced the rear diff fluid..

The whinning noise does not start until the truck has been driven a mile or so.. Whatever is whinning waits until it is hot/warm from road travel..
I have noticed that when it starts whinning, if i lightly press on the gas to basically nuetalize the pressure on the gears, the noise quiets some..

So we've gone from that clunking/banging to a whine? A D1/D2 transfer case isn't 100% quiet & gear whine is normal (lucky thats all the bone dry TC is making now) also letting on/off the gas can cause a clunk as it's trying to take up the speeds from both the front/rear diff and there is driveline slack which causes a slight clunk when you go on/off the gas

I let a friend drive one of my D2's and his driving style made it constantly clunk as he was on off the gas rather roughly. I got back behind the wheel and it never clunked for me.

I've had this truck for about 9 years. This is not a normal sound. The whinning I'm ok with, but theres still a feel to it that is not good.

I'm going to re-install the front driveshaft and remove the rear today to see if that changes anything..
