Drivshaft? What is the aweful banging noise?

Ok well then it's most likely your TC is fried from lack of lubricant. You can find 99-01 for sure with the CDL nipple vs specifically looking for an 04 TC. Just remove the 99-01 interlock solenoid and seal it up to use your 04 setup.

So I'm working on refilling and changing fluids.. I just took the front diff drain plug off and I found this on top... anything to worry about?? It had plenty of fluid in there

I agree about not using teflon tape on the diff drain plug. I did it on my front axle and it constantly dripped oil no matter a how much I torque down the drain plug. My rear diff drain plug didn't have tape on it and it's still dry as a bone.

Chris, if you've never changed your diff fluids and you don't know when they were last changed I would say that amount of metal on the magnetic drain plug isn't a problem. As in so many things, I am not an expert, but I recall that when changing mine for the first time I had something similar looking. Doesn't seem to me to be a reason for panic.

He's owned it for the last nine years apparently. So whatever has or hasn't been changed = he should know about.

Question It's toast!

Ok, so I did a fluid change on the Transfer case and drove the truck less than 2 miles and decided to drain it again to see what might come out. Tons of metal shavings..

SO, are these shavings from the bearings?? Won't the bearings come apart before the gears??

Is there a way to replace the bearings for cheaper than I could find a rebuilt or junkyard TC??

I have the 2004 Disco2 with the Range Rover P38 engine and the ZF 4HP24 Tansmission. I don't see a tag on my Transfer case, so I am wondering which one I have.. Are they all the same? Is there a part number somewhere so that I can research how to fix or rebuild??

Also, I am looking at this right here. This looks like a good part to swap out.

They all use the same transfer case with some minor differences (99-02 had the internal CDL but not connected, 02-03 had the internal CDL removed, 2004 had all the fun parts). Look for another 2004 or a 99-02 transfer case. Or send it to Ashcroft and have it rebuilt.

Question

So I got a TC off a 2004 wrecked Disco and it is not exactly like mine.. Thre's not a shift cable on the back part.. Can I switch these out??
