Default Engine Control Unit/ Testbook

Woke up the other morning and my Rover, 2000 Disco, would not start. Put used engine in last summer, heads, gasgets, almost everything, new O2 sensors last month, and power steering pump last week. Had it towed to my mechanic. He believes it is a bad ECU. Purchased used ECU from a salvage yard car will start but stalls right out. Rave said that this is what will happen until I get the ECU programed to the car. It says I need a TestBook/T 4 to reprogram. Does anyone know what that is, how to get it and how to re program the ECU? Thanks Ted

Correct, the ecu is in an immobilized state. Test Book / T4 are the dealer diagnostic systems. The BCU and ECU basically need to learn one another and be told the car isn't stolen and everything is OK, a process which requires TB/T4 or the like. Any LR specialty shop should be able to do this for you as Rovacom, Faultmate, etc. can all perform this function.

Thanks for the info. Does the ECU need to be in the car when it is programmed or can I take it alone to a shop for programming? I don't think my mechanic has the programs so I may have to tow the car or just take the ECU to someone who does. Anyone know a good shop with the equiptment to program an ECU near Greensburg PA.?

Greensburg, PA? Should have said you were local sooner.

I'd suggest you call Jagspeed Motorworks in Latrobe (724-520-1881). I don't know which scanner they've got, but if they can't help you, they'll know who can...

It could be done if you took both the BCU and Motronic unit but I doubt they'd want to do it that way. I'd get the car to them so that it can be tested after they're synch'd. It's a quick and tidy job, basically just plug in to the OBDII port, tick a couple of boxes and you're on your way.
