Engine Flush
It is a generic term. There are products formulated for just this process, like the one made by Gunk. But others will achieve good results by draining 3-4 quarts of engine oil, add the same amount of automatic transmission fluid back into the engine ---and let it IDLE for 20-30 minutes before draining the entire amount, and fitting a new oil filter and engine oil. An excellent additive for petroleum engine oil is Rislone. You add the entire quart at a oil change (normal capacity of a Rover V-8 is 6.5 quarts --so use 5.5 quarts and the one quart of Rislone). This keeps things in tip-top shape.
P.S. When I say run the engine at idle for the 20-30 minutes, I mean just that. Do not drive the vehicle with the ATF in the engine, as it is not a lubricant meant for heavy loading of bearing surfaces.

With engine warm, slowly pour 1/3 to 1/2 pint through carburetor or throttle body throat. (If vehicle is port injected slowly pour SEA FOAM through direct manifold vacuum line that will feed all cylinders, possible sources are P.C.V. valve or brake booster line.) This will pull SEA FOAM down on top of the pistons and to the back of the intake valves to dissolve carbon. Turn ignition off. Restart engine after 5 minutes. You don't need to mix w/ engine oil, you can fill the crankcase w/ 6 quarts of ATF and run as instructed. IDLE, NO DRIVING. I run it for 10 minutes, shut it off for 5 then run again for 10. Make sure to change the oil filter before and after doing the flush. Also, dropping the oil pan to make sure the pickup tube isn't clogged is a good idea. Someone on this forum recently had knocking and low oil pressure due to a clogged pickup tube.
