Default Engine ID?

After a couple of years of repeat codes and new parts not matching, I'm beginning to wonder if my salvage-titled D2 has an other-than-D2 engine. Where can I find the engine code on the block? And what code should I see if it is, in fact, a D2 engine? Thanks, mike

The code is etched in the block right where the oil dip stick goes in. You can look up the serial numbers and tell what model and year it was for.

Mine is etched on to the top deck of the block between cylinders 3 and 5 (that would be the middle two pistons on the driver's side). I'm sure there is a lot of information contained in the number but all you really need are the first 3 characters:
56D 1999 - 2002 4.0 liter w/o Secondary Air Injection
94D 1999 - 2002 4.0 liter with Secondary Air Injection
90D 1999 - 2002 4.6 liter w/o Secondary Air Injection
96D 1999 - 2002 4.6 liter with Secondary Air Injection

Rover V8 engine numbers are fun - but it is exactly where @greisinb says

So, (in smaller type and above the s/n) is "CR9.3711;" below that is "08D36525A."

Where can I find a s/n decoder? Thanks, mike

@mbrown3039 there is not one for engine numbers 9:37 is compression 8D is generally a 4.6. All the engine number lists stop between 2000 and 2002. These engines were in built over 40 years and used in everything from cars to 4x4's. I have never found a list with mine and is a 8D.
