Engine Knock??
Hey all, new to the site, here goes. 2000 Dll with just shy of 90k on clock. Meticulously maintianed since i purchased it about 3 yrs ago. Im more than **** when it comes to "hearing things" in any vehicle, but particularly when it comes to mine. Over the last 15k or so i have noticed a kinda knock or piston slap noise in my truck. Worse when cold but thats a given, only makes this noise when you drop the truck in gear, but no load hardly any noise. Its my understanding thses trucks have fairly good bottom ends and its not like a rod knock that gets worse with rpm. Im a tad leary to pop the hood and give it a listen with the stethescope just incase its relly bad. Everything seems to function well outside of hearing this noise. Any Ideas???

RE: Engine Knock??
yeah ive thought that route as well. but its decieving sound and what gets me is how it comes on when i put it in gear. i would think the lifters would make noise aside from the load on the motor. Would you hapen to know if worn lifters in these motors will be easily read on an oil analysis?

RE: Engine Knock??
I do not know if a SOS would give you a answer on this or not.
You could try doing a engine flush and see what happens.
As for only doing it when under load...that makes sense since it just started, it will probally get worse with time.
Are you using full synthetic motor oil?

Yes always, mobile1 and it prob never goes past 4k. Ive taken note when dropping the oil nothing shiny. I wouldnt say it just started, ive been noticing it more latley. Now i live in Pa which is colder from VA where i just moved from. Kind strange though. the truck sat for a yr while i was in iraq, i never noticed it as much as i do now. That motor has had regular flushes since i have owned it. This change i tried a bit of the lucus in the sump, but the noise stayed the same.

I'm curious what kind of engine flushes and how often? What octane gas do you use? I've heard that you can unplug a spark plug one at a time to take the load of a cylinder and try to isolate or change the noise, that might show a wrist pin or piston slap. Get in there, listenand do some tests, it could be anything.
