Now to clarify is that for the DII? LR3? LR4?
My DI owners manual has a whole page with a oil chart stating which oil to use during which temps, everything from 5w-20 upto 20w-60, even straight 30 weight is listed.
The dealer that my truck was always serviced at before I bought it was always 10w-40.
My car is a DII. Thanks for clearing up the oil thing. The people at lightning lube need to ask you next time lol. So if its not the oil then what the heck is the knocking? Did you watch the video? Is that a usual noise and am i just paranoid? Is it the oil filter?

When you changed the oil, what did the oil look like that came out? Was it normal looking dark oil that flowed easily, or was it thicker?

As Spike has said, the 15w40 isn't too heavy, and I'm running it also. I'm just really wondering what was in there before.

so on a slightly different note, it looked like the low gas light was on in that video. so if you are willing to let your tank get that low which is not good for the fuel pump I have to ask what type of gas are you putting in when you do fill up. have you recently changes the type of gas to save money? running your tank to the point of the light comming on is not the best thing to do. aas for oil. I run rotella 15w-40 with the mobil 301 filter adn I have no issues in fact thte engine is actually a little smoother...

That's one of the bug benefits of diesel spec oils like Rotella. They have a stronger detergent package in them and tend to clean things out that make nose at startup/while running after using them for a few changes.

It really wasn't that low, I have about a quarter of a tank left. It was sitting on the ramp that goes into my garage.

But it wasn't making the noise before I put it in. Maybe it pulled some loose?

I didn't change the oil, I had lightning lube do it because I was afraid I would screw something up, and I couldn't tell which bolt was the drain.

Sounds crazy, but this exact same thing happened to me and that is what it was. Happened exactly like what you are describing (overnight), especially with the faster "clicking" noise on increased RPMs. If you can notice it from the inside with the windows rolled up, like it's ticking against the firewall in the middle, then that's what it is I bet.

The wire can come lose, barely clinging on, so it will still provide enough spark to fire the cylinder (you will not notice any engine performance degrades), but will throw a heck of a clicking noise, sounding like heavy valve/lifter noise at idle. The give away though is the fast clicking (almost electrical) sound on acceleration. Because of where these idiots mounted the coil back, the sound echos all over the place.....
I checked all the wires I could feel and they all felt good and tight. Another thing: The noise was almost non-existent when I started it this morning.

Yeah it does not sound that bad man. Not as bad as I thought it was going to. Sounds to be simple valve or lifter noise. Your probably let loose some sludge or build up on the oil change. It's definitely not knocking. Sounds like a diesel.

Do you know what oil the guy was using beforehand? Normal, synthetic, etc.

I have no idea what weight was in it, or even whether it was synthetic or not. Is it anyting to worry about then? Could it be exhaust-related?
