I got 2 range rovers, one with 190k that you cant hear running if you lean on it, and one with 120k that was overheated 1,325 times before I bought it and brought it back to life, both have been getting the BIGGEST CHEAPO (size matters NOT quality) filters I can find and 10/30 pepboys brand .99c a quart oil and I have never had a problem, these engines are built with such sloppy tolerances you could put vegetable oil in it and it would run the same as Torco Full syn...

My truck is nice and quiet with 203k on her and Rotella in the crank case.
I also use the OEM sized oil filters.
The last guy on here to buy a case of oil filters had to sell them for a loss because he totaled his truck.

So I changed the oil again today (did it myself this time) to make me feel better about the noisy motor. I put Castrol Syntec 10w-40 in it with a K&N 3001 oil filter. I also saw on the "Major Service" posted by DiscoMike to get "2 bottles of Seafoam gas additive". One for the fuel tank and one for the crankcase? It says to add 1 bottle for the fuel so both couldn't be for that, right? It says it works in fuel, the crankcase, or vacuum lines. I purchased some today along with the oil and was trying to figure out if they both go in the tank or what. As of getting home today, I have driven 25 miles since I changed the oil....and the motor is still noisy

One can of SeaFoam would be for the gas tank, then other for the engine oil and then do a 500 mile oil change.
But try this instead for the engine oil, use Marvel Mystery oil.
A few guys on here have had good luck quieting down their engine with it.
Keep in mind that I am not a fan of additives and I normally do not recommend them.
And whatever you do do NOT do a ATF engine flush.

I can't believe after all the ticking/knocking problems that have been reported on all the countless forums I've visited that no one has been able to report the cause of all this mayhem and that it still remains a mystery, boggles my mind.

It sounds as though we all (at least most of us on here) are experiencing the same symptoms, ticking at idle. But, once the throttle is increased, oil pressure is increased, the sound tends to dissipate. I'm of a right mind, to quite my job, tear the motor down, and dedicate my time to finding the root cause of "the tick". That way I will be able to drive my Disco in peace and not have to roll my window down at every stop light, to hear if it's still ticking. Thinking to myself, maybe some how it magically stopped!

Then you haven't been reading much.

There is no single problem that causes ticking. Trying to find this single problem is the problem in itself.

Valve train noise, clogged oil passages, compressed piston skirts/piston slap, slipped liners.....they ALL tick.

Did the seafoam, once I use this tank up, I'll try the mystery oil. Also did a radiator flush to get the dexcool from the prev. owner out. Added a bottle of watter wetter, afterwards being told it doesn't work, but disco mike thinks it does so hopefully it does something. My knocking is still the same, but the ticking when accerlerating is louder! I'm starting to think the ticking maybe be exhaust manifolds instead of related to the knocking.

Yeah, god forbid you put in some light ester oil with a detergent package (ATF). Go right for the Benzine/Mineral spirit cocktail (MMO) made in the '20s to clean carbon out of carburetors.

Let me be clear, I did NOT mean to fill the crank case with MMO and run the engine that way.
I meant to add it to the engine oil and drive for 500 miles and then change it.
You have to agree that is better than filling your engine with ATF and idling it for a half hour.
Again, I am not a fan of using any additives in your engine oil.
If you need a additive then you need a different oil.
