Default Engine Overheating Issue

First off, thanks all for your help with my recent oil pressure issue. I changed oil and filter and my problem went away.

Here's what happened to my 2000 Disco 2 with 182K miles: first, have a look at the pic of my normal operating temperature, as indicated by the temp gauge.

1. After driving for a bit, I came to a red traffic light. After sitting at the light for a few minutes, the temp increased noticeably. See "temp after sitting.jpg".

2. In response, I turned the heat on. NOTE: the heat was hot for about two minutes, before it began to blow cool air. That brought the temp down some. See "temp after turning heat on.jpg".

Another observation: the heat fluctuation happened again, but this time, the temp went down after beginning to drive.

My questions are:

1. Is my normal operating temp "normal"?
2. What would cause my temperature to fluctuate like that?
3. Is or could the loss of heat be related?

I've recently flushed by coolant system. I do believe that there's a leak somewhere, because I can smell antifreeze when I get out of the truck. I also need to top her off with coolant one every week or 10 days.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me, fellas!

If it were head gaskets, wouldn't there be other symptoms present? No leaks around the heads....

Question: I've only owned the truck for about a year. How can I tell if the heads have been done? Frankly, I assumed that they were because of the high miles and the fact that they're so clean looking.

Thanks for your response.

It got hot because there is not enough coolant in it to keep the engine cool.
There was no heat because there is not enough coolant in it to carry heat to the heater core.
Add coolant, find your leak.
