engine resealed, ticking
Any insight or help is appreciated.
Had my '03 Disco II engine resealed at 69K. Reseal included replacing head gaskets, crank seal, cover, thermostat, lifters, and degrease/clean etc. Almost immediately, a constant ticking and also knocking around 70MPH. Shop then replaced bearings at a discount said they were bad.
No more knocking but the constant ticking noise (warm and cold engine) is still there. Also not sure how to explain - but on a cold start, the engine sounds "rough" for a couple of seconds and then settles down (maybe a couple knocks not sure).
Told oil pressure ok cold, warm and at 2200.
Service manager said - might need new crankshaft or block.
Any experience or insight the forum has???

was the work done at a dealer or indepedent shop?
do you know what bearing were replaced? crank, rod or camshaft.
did they say in PSI what your oil preasures were, ie. 10 psi or 30psi or just OK.
I see they replaced the lifters but i dont anywhere is say they replaced the camshaft.

Thanks all! I have to look for the PSI numbers but I remember looking at the forum and they seemed in line with other posts. But maybe I need to see about how to check it myself.
The work was done at an independent shop which was highly recommended by other Rover owners and referenced on some message boards with high reviews.
No parts listed with either Cam or Shaft referenced.
The bearings I believe were crank - believe there were 6 bearings and showed me were a couple of them were damaged which I don't understand since the knocking came after the reseal not before - the bearings seemed to fix it though, it's just the constant ticking and the sound it makes for about 3 seconds after she's started. But after a few seconds, the rpms come down and the "roughness" sound is gone. Imagine if you're sound asleep and woken unexpectedly and are startled for 2 seconds until you get your bearing (no pun intended) that how she sounds when she I start her.

I replace lifters all the time. Never had a problem.
Our Discovery 1 has had a knocking noise upon startup for about 10 years - starting around 40,000 miles. At startup, sounds like a chatter - like piston slap or such.
Now at 163,000 miles - that sound is quite louder when the engine is started from cold.
In about 5 minutes or when the temps are up at operating that sound is all but gone.
At 98,000 my Discovery II makes the exact same noise. Not as loud and goes away faster.
If the noise goes away when it reaches operating temps, then don't worry about it - as Spike says...
You can be fussy and tear the engine apart again, but, why bother?
Wait for the engine to be apart for other reasons and then fix it all then.

Kim Rover - What weight oil and type of filter are you running? If ticking starts at cold, and continues, perhaps valve train is involved and problem may be just under the valve cover. Or something was left behind..... maybe your mechanic is missing a socket, or worse.
