The inline thermostat is the only way to cure the slow build of heat in these engines. You can have a perfect performing land rover cooling system (new rad, fan clutch, water pump, etc..) along with the land rover grey180 thermostat, and in extreme heat or extreme long slow hilly desert trail climbs... they seem to want to slowly build heat. That's been my experience anyway...

@Motorhead1 Everything does the slow heat increase off road, full on aluminum engines are just more heat-sensitive. Moving the thermostat to the radiator output with a bypass hose for emissions was the problem with the stock setup - you always ran hotter than you should under load.

The engine was designed with a standard V8 cooling setup, top of the engine to the rad. You might note that liner and overheat issues got worse when BMW moved the thermostat location ad bumped the running temp.

I’ve never run it, but the in line setup is exceptionally well documented to help more than anything, but I personally don’t think it’s necessary. There are reasons outside temp alone making one worth it.

However, as I said, I’ve never run it before as I’ve never had a need. The single greatest aid to me was a Flowkooler water pump. Towing a dirt bike with a full rack and roof top tent from CO to Death Valley and back inside a week and the temp never got to 200F. This included multiple climbs and descents from below Sea Level to over 12k feet.

My point is certainly not to down the in line setup, but to focus on the actual issue: a healthy system in the first place. Radiators are well known to tank in these. Dexcool is well known to cause issues if not serviced or installed properly. Fan clutches also are a knee jerk purchase when getting into D2 land.

And yes, do the PCV mod. That alone actually slowed if not completely eliminated my engine leaks. Did I mention this in an ‘04 with 184k on the clock?
