Default Expansion Tank - Replace or Okay?

I noticed that my coolant expansion tank might be slightly separating at the seam.

Is this cause for replacement or just a normal manufacturing defect?

Steve

100% replace it! And please don't waste your time trying to use an epoxy or RTV adhesive...it won't hold.

Get a new cap also. Reservoirs are known to fail and inexpensive on eBay.

Probably the most important repair/upgrade you can do for your disco is to have your cooling system in the best shape possible. If your expansion tank looks like that my next goal would be to replace the radiator, thermostat & hoses with new.

High engine temps are no joke with these engines.

It's a mess and pia job but you can get an inexpensive radiator, hoses & thermostat off of eBay and take an afternoon to rebuild and your rover will thank you.

Thanks and I couldn't agree more....I've read countless posts/articles on the good and the bad of cooling these things.

Overall, the cooling system is in great shape, flushed 2 times in the last 20k miles by previous owners (with paperwork). About 6 months ago, the tstat was replaced with a 180* and upper hoses.

Consistent temps are 188-204 depending on speeds/outside temp and that's in Las Vegas with outside temps in the 110's.

Sounds like you are on the right track then! On to bigger & better things.

Also sounds like the vehicle is new to you. The 60,000 mile service sticky at the top of the forum is also a good project list to work thru over the next few months. Lots of good advice in that list.

Thanks Chris. I reviewed that and have completed a lot of them already or have paperwork that they were completed in the past 20k miles.

In the last three months I've replaced all the rotors, pads, braided lines, new suspension, oil change with Rotella, new f/r greaseable driveshafts, diff fluid, air filter, headlight/reverse bulbs, and battery.

In the next three months I plan to install the expansion tank, remove Heated TB, flush power steering fluid, replace xfer case fluid, trans filter and flush, tb clean/Induction Clean, oil change again, and replace the leaky muffler.

Its a labor of love!
