Default Fan removal

Now trying to do a power steering pump. I know this has been discussed a lot, hopefully my question is a little different. I have the clutch tool, tried shocking it, didn't work. The pulley is just spinning. Tried rags, couldn't figure that out. Is there a tool I can go buy to hold the pulley while I remove the clutch?

Thanks!

The key when hitting it is to hit it with a slow blow hammer or something that doesn't bounce, and to also basically hit it straight down vs to the side. I've had severely rusted fan clutch threads and eventually with a slow blow hammer, and hitting it a few good times eventually breaks it loose.

You can also place a socket onto one of the water pump bolts and have someone else apply downward pressure to it while you wack the 36MM Fan Clutch tool with a slow blow hammer (normal hammer works, but I like how a slow blow doesn't bounce).

I have the 36mm fan clutch tool. That's not the issue. In fact I have a couple. I don't see room to place a socket on the water pump bolts, and it just Spins! Need to hold it down.

I've used open end wrenches to hold the water pump pulley or a small 1/4 drive socket wrench.

I'll try again. Look at the inset picture and you will see how the tool holds the pulley. It really is that easy... Universal Fan Clutch Wrench

Sorry for not looking closer. Are these available from harbor freight, or northern tool? Thanks!

I went to Lowe's and bought a 3 foot piece of 1 inch wide steel bar that is probably about an eighth of an inch thick. I cut it in half to end up with two 18 inch pieces, and then drilled a hole near one end of one of the bars just large enough to slip over one of the pulley bolt heads (3/8" ?).

I set the bar in place with the hole over one of the pulley bolts at roughly the 7 o'clock position on the pulley and the right edge of the bar (facing the engine) against the outside of the next bolt on the pulley that is in roughly the 10 or 11 o'clock position. That keeps the pulley from rotating counter clockwise while trying to remove the fan.

I know that explanation may not be the clearest ever but this solution essentially does what the tool pictured above does and costs about $5 instead of over $40.

I used a long screw driver to wedge in between the pully bolt and the pully. then used the wrench to spin the fan off.

Go to the autoparts store.
Get a crecent wrench which is long and fits pretty much up to the alternator.

If they have a 5 pound stubby hammer get that too.

OR go to Sears and get the 5 pound stubby hammer there.

Position the crecent wrench onto the fan bolt and have the wrench up near the pulley of the alternator.

Put rags under the belts at the pulleys.

Now whack the hammer from left to right into the crecent wrench handle

This will break the rust in the threads and loosen the bolt.
The fan will then drop off the front of the water pump.

you need to whack it counter clock wise standing in the front of the truck looking toward the back of the truck.
