Default Fault code P1179

I'm receiving a Fault code P1179 - AMFR (Air Mass Flow Rate) Correction At Maximum Negative Value... The Mass Air Flow Unit is clean and all the vacuum lines (the three I could identify - one coming out of each intake manifold into the plenum and the one back behind the fuel injection unit taking care of the fuel flow regulator; I think) are all in good shape. I don't think it's an '02 sensor issue, even though the '97 Disco I has 107k miles on her... I just had it smoged and you could have a picnic behind it, plus all four of them have several fault codes of their own.

Any thoughts on how to fix this once and for all? I'm hoping it's not the MAF unit, my mechanic tells me that they don't fail that often. I always run a clean, stock air filter.

Thanks everyone...

I take it you have several other codes as well? Sometimes if you have several O2 codes, it can throw a MAF code. If you are throwing codes on your O2's, and with 100K, I would replace all of your O2's. You will get better mileage also.

Thanks Okdiscoguy... Sorry for the miss-communication, that's the only fault code that popped up, no other codes... as I mentioned, the vehicle runs so clean you could eat behind it (based on the smog test)... I would think if an O2 Sensor was out, that would not be the case...

Any other thoughts on how to solve this issue...?

Happy 4th of July...!

You might want to see if you can swap out a MAF with someone else and see if it corrects the problem before going out and spending the big bucks.
Are you using a K&N air filter, have you tried to clean the MAF?

Thanks Disco Mike - I did clean the MAF unit with an alcohol spray spray, yet in my opinion, it was really clean to begin with. I wanted to put a K&N filter in way back when, but everyone said to stick with the stock filer and change it out often, so that is what I've done... I'll head over to California Rover in Encinitas and find one to swap out with to see if that solves the problem. How much "Big Bucks" are we talking about... if it's the actual unit itself?

Thanks again,

$225 for a used one and depending on the model, $400 to $600 for a new one.

Disco Mike, fortunately, it was not my MAF unit... I went out and bought a Penray 3 step fuel injection and air intake cleaner kit with the 303 "IV" feeder tube and by the time I ran the Intake Valve Deposit Cleaner through the Plenum (main vacuum intake), my Check Engine light was out... the Disco has never run so well (at least as long as I have owned it...). Thanks again for your help.

What is this stuff? Just curious, and where did you put the stuff into the plenum?

It's made by Penray, go to www.penray.com, click automotive and contact them to find out where in your area you can buy the 3 step fuel injection and induction clean up kit. You have to buy the "IV" separately... It's the only way you can run the Penray 2312 Intake Valve Deposit Cleaner into the Fue Injection plenum via the main vacuum port located towards the back of the left valve cover. Very easy to do, follow the directions and make sure you have someone in the vehicle to keep the rpms between 1200 and 1500 while you're slowly sending the product through the IV.

Basicily he did an induction cleaning, along with the fuel injector clean, not sure if he go the throttle body or not though.
Good call Craig,
Mike
