The owners manual says you can switch hi/lo either stationary or at 5mph as long as the main gearbox is in Neutral. It says if there is resistance (while stationary) to put it in Drive, with engine running, then back to Neutral and try again.
It also says the diff lock can be engaged at any speed.
But I did try it while it was rolling but no luck.
It's gonna be nice this weekend so I think I'll try what discoxd posted.

If you can't shift it at a stand still, then you need to go get the system opened up and cleaned and greased.
PM me your phone number and I'll walk you thru what to do.

OK.... Finally got it to shift Hi/Lo but can't move to the left. Thought it was starting to loosen up until I realized that the hi/lo selector was starting to slide off the spline. I used a 13mm socket and extension, (I'm doing this all from the top) and was able to move the nut and the linkage move a bit, but the shaft doesn't move at all. So for now I have hi/lo. At least I made some progress. Maybe the shifter is bad??
Mike, sending you a PM......

I decided to take everything out. First the linkage. Took 2 hours as the top pin was seized (fun using a center punch at a 40 degree angle... lol) the bottom of the linkage is rotted out. Removed the shifter and found the base filled with rust and water so I think somebody had some serious offroad fun. The side of the shifter where the 2 screws are is rusted out. Everything inside is pitted and rusted. I'm not going to even bother wasting my time on this. So does anyone know where I can get a new or rebuilt shifter?

Thank You !!!! I completely forgot about checking roverland. I ordered my door latch from them. $150 seems like a good price and will be better than having a socket and extension sticking up thru the floor. Thanks again.

Quick question.... when I get the replacement shifter, what type of grease should I pack into it? wheel bearing grease? u-joint grease? or something else? I don't want to go thru this again anytime soon!!!!
