After ~4 months of looking at my Holiday gift of a locking transfer case, it's finally installed. I wanted to do the job myself, but for a lot of reasons, just never had the time. While my forearm is a bit blistered from the heat, I was able to (dis)engage the cdl, and I can't wait to go offroad with it. I searched the forums quite a bit tonite, and just want to make sure I understand the intricacies of the engagement:

engagement with engine on -- abs, hdc, etc...still work
engagement with engine off -- all of the above?
wish i could have tested this all prior to posting, but I didn't have an area close to do so.

engaging cdl on pavement won't hurt any parts of the drivetrain, it will just make turning, etc...more difficult.

Do not drive very far with it engaged on pavement, it will hurt the drivetrain and cause damage.
If you engage with engine on, all functions of Abs, HDC, and TC will work.
If you engage while off and then turn the car on, they will all be disabled.
If you engage while on and then turn it off, upon restart, all 3 functions will be disabled.

Enjoy your CDL! It will make a world of difference.

 

The 2003s are supposed to have the same SLABS programming as the 2004, where it doesn't disable the ABS, HDC, and TC. Please let us know if that is true for you. The switch is connected right? The light comes on on the dash?

 

WRONG.... don't do it. You will be replacing a bunch of drive train components if you do that.

 

NO CLD ON DRY PAVEMENT, your going to have to lay in the dirt

 

x10 on the NO CDL ON PAVEMENT. do not even engage and then drive to the trail. get on the trail and then engage. it will chew up your drivetrain literally, on the pavement. But once you are there and it is engaged HAVE a blast. you will b amazed at the ability of the tractor you are now driving...

I've never heard this before, so my info may only be correct for 99-02.

 

while it is possible; 03 did not have a CDL option, so I do not know why the slab would be programed the same as an 04 which did have a CDL. It quite possibly have the same slab, but why they would program it for something that the did not want owner to access would be the question.

Also, I think they were planning on making it an option in 2003, because my owners manual talks about using it, if fitted.
