Default First DIY Oil Change any tips?

So I am taking the bull by the horns and doing my own oild change. I have 7 quarts of synthetic, an air filter and an oil filter. I figure I have to drain the oil then fill it and then change the oil filter. When I change the oil filter I have to fill it half way with oil. Then I change the air filter. Then start the car and make sure the oild light goes off. Re-check the oil level and then I'm done. Does this sound correct? Any pitfalls I should look for?

Thanks, next I need to change my brake fluid and get rid of the 3 amigos, change the ignition cables, then I need to change my front left wheel bearing. This 2002 Disco seems to have started to implode after 100,000 miles.

drain the oil from the pan then drain the oil filter.

do not add oil to the crankcase until those 2 things are done.

when you put the new filter on use some used oil to coat the rubber gasket on the new filter and fill the new filter with new oil about 1/2 way to protect against dry start.

then add oil to the engine and done.

Make sure that you lube the gasket on the oil filter with fresh oil.
After you start the engine let it run for a good minute while you check for leaks.
Shut it off and then wait another minute before you check the oil level.
But I can tell you, if it calls for 6 quarts and you add 6 quarts you will be fine.

As for your front wheel bearing, you have to replace the whole hub, about $400 for a new one.

Great thanks guys. The manual say it takes 6.1 Quarts so I will add 6 and have the 7th for the oil filter. On the hub yeah they are pricey and it stinks you have to buy the whole assembly but such as life. That may be a job for the mechanic though.

1- dont pour all 7 quarts in.
2- change the filter BEFORE you fill the oil (By the way you stated it, sounds like you wanted to fill the oil before changing filter).
3-flip the washer on the drain plug before installing

My $0.02: Don't count on the oil pouring out straight down into your "oil collector". It will come straight at YOU, aiming for your face and dripping down your arm before it decides that gravity is the way to go!

Have your floor protected for splatters and drips.

I speak from "1st time DIY oil change experience"!

It is just that one moment when the drain screw comes undone and the oil starts flowing. It got me... I also realized that the $10 oil collection device from Autozone really was a bad investment. The opening was too small to effectively catch all oil pouring out (especially the stuff pouring anywhere BUT straight down) and the darn thing leaks! So transporting it is a Royal PITA. However, Autozone does not except oil back in original oil bottles, only in "recycable containers", leaving me no options...
