Default First oil change

I am doing my first oil change since buying the rig used, and I am unsure as to what type of oil they had used in it. I want to follow the advice given to use Shell Rotella t6, but if I have conventional oil in it now will it mess it up? I can't do an engine flush before I do the oil change, unless it will only add 30 minutes to the process. Please help.

No, you will be fine. You might also want to read and perform the major service listed at the top of this section to get your truck current.

Thanks Mike. Tomorrow is an oil change and plugs and wires.
Payday will bring a new front drive shaft (trying Dynamic Drive Line's offering, per another user's recommendation).
I still need to change fluids for t-case, diffs, power steering, transmission, and brakes.
After that, it will be a coolant system flush and a new thermostat and pressure cap.
this is a lot of work, but I am hoping to keep this thing forever.
Other projects include: looking for jumpseats for an SE to SE7 conversion, gluing down the rubber seal on the lower windshield (broken cowl doesn't worry me at much as the rubber peeling away from the glass).

If I can't find Shell Rotella t6 near me, what are the specs on a synthetic I should be looking for?

Just skip the synthetic and go to Wal Mart and get Rotella 15w40. Your truck will thank you later.

I second this, it's only $12.95 per gallon and it's really good stuff.

I have an 04, and rave says to look for a 10w/40 oil, so I will just look for a synthetic of this. thanks again, Mike.

Any issues with cold, winter starts with a viscosity of 15?

Didn't see the others above. Okay, so just a 10W40 in conventional will do too? Either way, the 10W40 is the ticket. thanks guys.

Where I live, it doesn't snow and we only get maybe 5-10 freezes a year (covering the rose-bushes level, not pipes int he house level). I am not as concerned with cold as I am with heat (we had some 110 days this summer).
