Default Found an 04' discovery... looking to purchase

So after searching and searching i think i found my truck!!

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but a good 04' discovery is getting harder and harder to come across nowadays. I have been to 6-7 different dealerships and called half a dozen others to hear "Sorry that one sold last week" or "That vehicle is gone". I found one in the classifieds and left a messsage but no reply. Finally, the guy gets back to me a week later.

He said it was sold but the guy couldn't come up with the $$ or whatever..

SO here's the skinny:
  • 04' Discovery SE
  • Charcoal Grey w/black Interior
  • Under 45K miles
  • Documented Maintenance performed at LR
  • New front brakes
  • New tires
  • Under $9K
It does have some paint fading on the fender.
The Passenger seat does not raise or lower, all other motions work.
The undercarriage looks a little juicy from maybe from a messy oil change.
The Driver footwell was damp. Said it was from the interior being cleaned.
Land rover letters up front were painted over (possible body work)

I left a deposit on it since it passed most of the usual fail points. I will make my final decision tomorrow or Friday.

couple things i was curious about though...

Does LR usually write on the rear diff with a Yellow marker and leave a mark on the drain plug?

Should i be worried about a little oil residue on the output seal on the front diff/propshaft?

Or the brakes supposed to be a little soft?

There was a little bit of oil residue on the intake plenum by a hose that runs towards the firewall.

Hopefully i can seal the deal and post some pics if all goes well. i'm going to take her to LR for a PPI this wekend.

look at it like this.

for under $9k that is a ok deal.

you are gonna spend about $1000 to fix all the little nit picky things (shaft seal, etc)

then figure on the 60K miles service which is about $300 in parts.

new tires is nice, but make sure all the services have been documented.

i paid $13k for my rig, but seattle is a higher priced market and my rig was as close to perfect as any 04 disco i could find.

but mine came with all service records, brand new tires, and a fresh service and inspection from LR seattle. i was willing to pay a bit more for that little piece of mind.

and my rig came from a 1 owner lease return from beverly hills LR. my rig was a princess until i got it. now its filthy and the wheels are scuffed to all hell from off roading.

if you feel you are getting a good buy that is all that is important,,,,

I dont know if LR would mark the diff or not, if they did I would think that they would mark them both.
Have the inspection done and then go from there.
As for the leaks...Rovers leak. Change all the fluids and they should stop.
If nobody will run a Carfax report for you then spend the $$ and do it yourself.

Is your paint "peeling" or just fading? The driver side fender on mine has paint peeling, no big deal.
Don't know about the output seal, but check for greasable u-joints on the front prop shaft. You are going to want them.
The "juicy" undercarriage could be from any # of sources. mine was from leaky seals in the power steering pump, Lucas PS treatment seemed to clear it up. Beware of coolant leaks that could be an indication of a bad head gasket. Valve covers tend to loosen up and leak a bit.
My soft brakes were remedied by new pads, rotors, and a brake fluid flush-DOT 4 ONLY. might want to put stainless steel brake lines on your wish list.
The passenger side seat does not have the raise and lower option (not on mine anyway) look at the switches and you should see the difference in the markings compared to the driver's side.
$9k for 45k miles, seems reasonable. Mine (a 2003) has been pretty high maintanence, but nothing that I have'nt been able to do myself. I actually have been having fun keeping up with this myself, my wife just rolls her eyes....
