Frame Repair
I am looking at fixing the frame, either replacing the rear quarter or getting a shop to rebuild it. It is solid at the shock mount area, they believe there is enough to weld up new parts.
I was quoted $1200 to either build a new rear frame or to install a rear quarter section. That is with me pulling the tank and bringing it to them on a flatbed. He said it is probably a day or so of work to fabricate a replacement frame. They were not interested in the 6 piece kit that can be bought pre cut.
Last I checked no one was unable to get the rear quarter frame replacement.
The shop says they do a lot of frame replacement work, had two in the shop when I was there.
Does this sound like a reasonable quote? Any other pitfalls I should be aware of? Am I wrong to assume that it will simply be put back together correctly?

So Option #1 is $1,200 for them to rebuild what you've got with their own materials and Option #2 is $1,200 to install a $700 quarter frame that you provide? If I have that right I'd be inclined to go with the first option and save the $700. Regarding pitfalls I've not yet done this but there is no "critical" geometry back there and any kind of box tubing can be fabbed to fit if done right, and it sounds like they are proficient at this kind of work. I would not use the 6 piece kit either, that's just a bandaid that will eventually get you right back where you started.
Option 3 would be to install a rear 1/4 section your self, I did mine I was 70 years old at the time, its not that diffiult as I said in my post in this forum the hardest bit was emptying the tank and taking it out , I the cut thr back crossmember off before pre cutting the chassis legs then a final cut to fit the new 1/4 chassis, my Post was 'Busy few days; its still on the forum

Thanks I was just looking at that. If I can find a mobil welder it looks manageable. The last I looked, there were no quarter frames to be had.
I don't mind it being on blocks for a few days. I have been trying find a template or other that would show where it has to be cut, to make sure I have good steel there. The welder said it was fine. But I can imagine getting into it and not having enough good steel to put it back together.

Cutting and replacing the rear 1/4 is the smallest amount of welding anything else means more welding, easy for me as I was a Coded Fab Welder , but one thing that you cant see was I drilled 3 19mm holes in the ends of the new section on both sides of both legs and plug welded them as well for additional strength

I thought about running a rest of bolt through it just to hold it in place. My plan was to install the mounts as much as possible to provide additional points of alignment and use that to ensure things stay straight.

Hi I found the body was so strong, once I had put the new section over the over the cut end of the chassis i just bolted the new section up at the very back, this gives a perfect line up for the weld, you will need a few clamps to close up the wings that go over the old chassis,if you have looked at my post. the bits of wood I used to hold the back up were not needed they were just for piece of mind I had somthing to prevent any sagging, but were not realy needed
Thanks, add C Clamps to the list. It sounds like in theory, I could put it all together with a couple of bolts and drive it to be welded, if need be.
