Front axle steering knuckle (driver's side) only connected on one mount?
This might be a very stupid question, so please forgive me!
Today, I was checking out some things under the car (a 2003 D2) and noticed that the driver's side front axle steering knuckle was only attached at one of the mounting points. The knuckle on the passenger's side is mounted on both sides... This confused me. Maybe there's a simple explanation, or maybe something is horribly wrong!
I attached a diagram (apparently from a TD5 D2) that should help illustrate what I mean.
A bit of a side note as to part of why I was down there: I recently took the vehicle for an alignment since it was behaving a bit dangerously around 50MPH with very sensitive, twitchy driving... It's doing better now, although I'm still too nervous to drive it around 65MPH, so I'm driving very safely. The ball joints are somewhat worn (vehicle has about 140,000 miles) although I believe that job would require a press, which I don't have... I checked out the boots, various seals and bushings, which look more or less OK, although they're definitely wearing and could be allowing debris in at some points. I'll have to think about that another time, but I was concerned that this steering knuckle wasn't attached at both mounting points... Any ideas?
Please advise me - thank you and happy new year!
