When this happens the double cardon joint breaks in half.
Here are some drive shaft options for you.

Find a wrecked D2...and have the shaft rebuilt. It's by far the cheapest option. I was at my driveline shop getting mine rebuilt, and he had another one laying around.

Yep. You have used up all of your good luck for the next year if your transmission is intact. If the shaft itself is damaged, find a used one from a salvage yard, or other supplier, or go aftermarket (Tom Woods). If you get a used one, replace the U-joints and centering ball before installing.

If you're buying a propshaft, which I would strongly suggest, I'd go with a GBR or Tom Woods. The cost of a used propshaft plus getting it rebuilt will approach the cost of the heavier duty aftermarket propshaft.

I would replace the shaft and all. If the shaft is out of alignment your gonna be back on here with a new thread titled, " it snapped again". If you use the same shaft make sure to check its properly balanced. Good luck.

Got it towed home and took a look underneath there does not appear to be any collateral damage after a pretty thorough inspection. I was wondering if there is anything else I should be on the lookout for. Also what is my best bet for a replacement axel. I live in Denver and am relatively mechanical and from what I have found it seems like a pretty straight forward repair. Any advice or comments on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I am also in Denver, PM me your tele number and lets talk as to where to buy and what.

Not to hi-jack this thread but this is my worst fear. I've got 75,000 miles on my 2003 Disco and I'm living in fear everyday I drive the thing. Just finished the last of the 60k maintenance (Magnecor wires) and this is my next issue. Based on what I'm hearing I'd be better off just buying a new front drive shaft than rebuilding? GBR has them for 395.00 but don't know what Tom Woods is selling them for. I've been under the truck and the driveshaft looks better beat up. What's the general consensus?

If you're in Germany shipping is probably going to be rather steep. If you don't want to rebuild yours then getting one from the UK might save you some.
It really depends on how you use your rover. I think the OEM one is ok for 99% of Discoveries.
