Yeah, in diff lock. But it probably shouldn't be done for long periods of time.

That was mentioned to me as well. If you have the locking differentials. My 03 does not have it but my 04. Once you have it removed, you can drive it as 2 wheel drive. I thought it was indefinite to do that and if thats the case, I might save gas in the long run. LOL

So there is a differential in the center of these cars? Or just the front and rear axles?

Yes, it's called the transfer case. Contrary to what LR03NJ said the axle differentials don't get locked, the transfer case can be locked (on some vehicles) allowing it to be driven with either the front or rear driveshaft removed.

oh, ok, so i thought that transfer case was solid and drove the front and rear axle with only a diff being in the front and rear axles. so there is a diff in the transfer case as well then?

so i test drove this 1999 D2 7 passenger Sunday and when in full lock left or right, i could feel a very slight bind in the four wheel drive system. the owner selling it told me that was normal for 4x4's? the steering was not tuff, but you could feel a little more resistance the closer the end of lock as you turned the steering wheel. or is the diff in the transfer case going out?

I have not used those features with locking the differentials. Never been in a situation that I need to dig myself out. BUT, it could be right. I also have a Jeep, whenever I use the 4 wheel drive feature, turning left or right will be a bit harder since both the wheels are turning the same time.

thoughts,

buy the white 1999 D2 that has 225k miles on it according to car fax but has a mileage inconsistency from the end of the 2nd owner to the 3rd were it drops back down to 176k miles and the odometer is flashing. current odometer reading is about 180k, selling at $2300. thats as low as they want to go at this time as there add states $2900 right now

or

i found one from a dealer 2000 D2 maroon in color for $4500 ( add has it priced at $4995) that has a good carfax report, and has 98k miles on it and looks to be much cleaner. going to go test drive it in 30 mins. so ill let you know how that goes when i return home tonight. do you all think thats priced to high still at $4500?

Depends upon condition and what's available in your local market. Independent dealer or affiliated with new car sales? Spend some time before and after test drives beneath vehicle with a good light and use your nose. At that price I'd want excellent condition, rust free and newish tires. Recently paid a bit north of that figure for '04 with similar mileage and have no regrets. Fortunately in my case some issues that popped up after purchase that weren't revealed by a couple of typical short test drives have been relatively inexpensive and easy to repair.
