Default Fuel Door

Couple questions on the disco 2 fuel door. The problem, the actuator has managed to disappear (ok I can hear it working, but it looks to have fallen away from where it should be so the little bolt that the fuel door latches on to is well, not where it should be).

That said, replacing it is $250 (maybe 200) if I don't need the part. So, I was going to pull the interior panel to have a look and see if I could solve this myself. Problem, I can't figure out how to get those plastic screws off that holds the plastic paneling in place...any suggestions on getting that interior plastic off?

Thereafter, even if I do get it off, has anyone ever replaced a disco 2 fuel door with one from a disco 1 (and rigged a latch)? Alternately, is there any "manual" after market fuel door out there? The actuator seems like a piece of crap part that I just don't trust. Would love to get rid of it, but before I go and weld, cut and anything else, I figured someone has to have done this before. Any ideas?

No, just the opposite, I can't get it to close since the actuator has fallen away (there's nothing for that little plastic latch to grab on to).

You are over thinking it, this is a common problem with DII's, buy 2 of these as you will break the first one putting it on.

Right, but the latch itself isn't the problem, the actuator is. What I am trying to find out though is if a disco 1 fuel door will "fit" i.e. size and shape or if anyone has rigged a fuel door for the disco 2 to work without the actuator.

No a DI fuel door will not fit.

Use this to keep it closed.

Yep, been using that for now...

So second question, any thoughts on how to get the plastic screws out that hold the interior paneling in place?

you can use a panel popper or a flat head screw driver. look at some threads for headliner replacement you will see people taking that panel off.
