With the fuel prices what they are and having to use Premium fuel its time to see what works to get better mileage.

1. We all know about slowing down sowe don't need to beat that dead horse.

2.We all know that keeping plugs, filters, and oils changed will help.

3. Low Roll Resistance tires will help, the only one I know for us is the Michelin LTX M/S.
The LTX M/S is a road tire with very light off road use possible.

What I see is that most things that claim to help mileage don't work on Land Rovers or appear not to work.
The reason I say Appear not to work is that we get poor mileage to start with soif something only helps by say 5% its hard to say its works for us at 11mpg that would only be .55mpg improvement.

So let have the best things that you have done that you have found that works.

I don't think we need to see snake oil or the like,,, you know the Something 50 or that type of thing.

i've heard of driving in 3rd gear on a disco for city stop and go traffic.

What sort of mileage are you currently getting?
Really good wires, 8 mm Magnecore's, Bosch Platium Plus 4's or their new Fusions, an engine flush along with and induction cleaning and that is about it. Higher air pressure will help, 91 plus octane gas don't go over 70 MPH and you should pull a good 18 MPH, it does for me.

 

This for the people that need or want to get better mileage.

Mine will never get good mileage with my setup and I'm good with that.

Its just at times I have read about poor mileage and I started this to give Disco Owners a place to share their ideas that they have tried and found that works for them.

So lets have the things that you have found to work,,
or Disco owners just going to poor mileage.

 

Cruise control. Even in town. Speed limit is 35mph, everybody else drives 45mph, I set my cruise at 35, time all the lights and can drive a 5 mile stretch of city streets without slowing down.

 

Steady speed, right on the limit, low braking, and shell gas.
Those things will help quite a bit
Along with the good wire, plugs, etc.
I put a bottle of Shell V power gas tank cleaner and saw a 1 MPG increase the last 2 fill ups.
I also put seafoam in every 3,000 miles.
I am now up to 14.5 as an average city MPG
I was at 11 this time last year.

 

As I already mentioned, do the above.

 

I'm gonna chime in here and say TIRE PRESSURE. Check often since vehicle is heavy.

I am running an 04 discovery II thats absolutley stock. Newish stock wranglers. I drive it everyday.

Disco Mike recommended 35psig front 40psig rear for Discovery II and thats what Im running. Thats up from 30psig front and 38psig rear.
The manual says to check tire pressure 'cold'. I ask 'how cold?' I live in northern Canada and I can supply tire pressure 'cold' readings from 0c to minus 50c, so whats correct? I use the 'standard day' we use in aircraft maintenance which is +15c at sea level. Since I work in an aircraft maintenance hangar I fill my tires with nitrogen. It is supposedly 'inert' and can contain no moisture like plain old air. With crazy temperature variations moisture can cause hell.

As it turns out this works out to a noticable improvement in mileage on the disco II. From 327kms per tank to 353kms per tank. I use the odometer trip reset button when I fill up and fill up again immediatley when the "I'm thirsty!" or low fuel light comes on. I drive the same route every day. Remember that theres still quite some fuel left in the tank when that low fuel light illuminates. Just under a 1/4 tank.

This is easy and the best part is its FREE (F. R. double E -FREE! sing it!)

How does it affect the ride? It simply doesnt. Still very plush and I drive over some of the most potholed rutted unimproved roads most folks have ever seen. However since I'm yakking on a land rover forum I will compare my driving environment to the Alaska or Cassiar highways.

The Disco II sucks the Dinosaur Juice. Theres no way around it. If it only had an extendable ramp so that you could march the dinos straight into the 'fossilator'

I have heard that keeping your truck body shiny with frequent waxing can lower wind resistance, and also not stacking things up on the top roof rack. Both could help incrementally. As mentioned before, running more air in the tires lowers rolling resistance, thus increasing mileage at some trade-off of slightly rougher ride.
