Fuel pump does not seat

Just received my used pump and trying to get installed. This is my first fuel pump install with a rover so any help is appreciated. Basically getting it in and pushed down but does not seat/lock enough for the lock ring to get enough bite. Will not hold and allow the lock ring to secure it.
BTW, replacing it due to the fact that the original one leaks through the top and I have had some issues with starts lately, takes 2-3 bumps then runs fine. Did the key on for 5-10 seconds etc.
Thanks
Rob

You need a bigger hammer.
The only tip I can give you is to keep trying, maybe turn it part way then put it in and then try to install the ring.
So with it facing at 12 o'clock turn the pump to 3 o'clock, install it.
Screw the ring down 1/4 turn or so, turn pump back to 12 o'clock, tighten ring.
Try something like that once.

Ok used my 16lbb sledge, whew, got it.
Ok for real now, here's the deal, gotta be 10% smarter than what you are working on or you will always lose.
I had the new seal on the pump and because of the lip it did not want to seat into the tank. Seat seal into top of tank first, pump goes in and seats like a charm. Lock ring went on without a problem. Amazingly enough truck ins starting like it is supposed to now. I guess those engineers are right, cars do need gas.
Thanks for the help
