Default Fuel Temperature Sensor, 02 Sensor, And Fueling Issues

Hi. I'm new to the Discovery Forum. I purchased a 1997 Discovery about a month ago, and I suspect I didn't purchase wisely. I now know, that I probably should have gone to the dealer to get a diagnostic review, but nonetheless my kids andI really love the vehicle.

Three problems:

1 & 2) the check engine light is on. Dealer told me to replace the ignition wire and plugs all to the tune of $900.I wasn't stupid enough to do that, so I found a mechanic to do the work at half the cost.

Check engine light came back on abouta week later. Mechanic says codes are showing faulty 02 sensors and fuel temperature sensor. He recommended that I replace the fuel temperature sensor for now. The total is $441 (labor about $300, the rest are parts). Does this sound right? Should I forgo the 02 for now? The vehicle has 58,000 miles on it.

2) Fuel tank does not fill completely. The pump turns off just after a few gallons. I can put more in manually, if I pump slowly. However, this technique is not flawless as I've hada few overflows. Would can I do about this?

Thanks in advance.

What are the exact fault codes you are getting, if you don't know go to Auto Zone or some other parts store and have them read the code numbers, then get back to us.
What brand of plugs and wires did you have installed?
Lets get the truck running well then deal with the fueling issue.

If you are mechanical at all, the fuel temp sensor is easy to replace. Answer Mike's questions to start so we can tell you where to go from here.

Also, call your local dealer with your VIN to check for any recalls. My filler neck had been recalled due to a crack at the tank (recall)

Hi guys. The mechanic gave me the codes of P179 and PO183. When I told him that the fuel temperature sensor should not be that difficult to replace, and that two hours labor seemed a bit of an overstatement, he balked at first. Then, offered to do it for less money. He said that they charge by the codes in the "book." Uh, yeah...whatever.

I'm more than willing to do this myself. Just show me the way. Thanks for your help. Morgan
