Default gear and xfer case oil additive required?

00 disco

im going to replace the fluids in both diffs and the xfer case when my front prop shaft arrives next monday... i found the viscocity (correct me if im wrong 75/90) and the approximate amounts required (4.1-4.8 pints xfer and 3.4-3.6 per diff).

now only thing i noticed is that it says the xfer case needs atleast api gl5. the amsoil meets this requirement, so my only question remaining really is...

do i need the friction modifier additive like my trans ams rear diff did? (think it was called gm limited slip additive) but i didnt see any mention in rave about slip additive... just wanted to be sure before going out to the diesel truck shop to grab the lube its abit of a hike, i dont want to have to make 2 trips if i dont have too.

You need a total of 7 qts.
We do not have limited slip diffs, so no friction modifiers are needed.
The modifiers help the clutch inside the limited slip diffs grip better.
If you used limited slip diff fluid you would not need to buy it separate.

alright thanks for the info, i havent done any reading up on the type of axle, trans and 4x4 system in these trucks yet but im paranoid so anytime i get a new vehicle, everything gets changed asap.

ps. recommend changing the cover gaskets (101k miles) on these or are they pretty good for now assuming no leak thru detected when i get under there.

You can use any brand of diff and T/C gear oil you like.
But after using Mobil 1, Valvoline, and Royal Purple. I really like the 75w/140 Royal Purple. It seems to really make the gears smooth and quiet the Transfer Case. It will set you back about $100 for 6/7 quarts @ $15 per quart. But you can always use Wal-mart Tech(Something) Fully Syn brand for about $10 a quart if you want to save some cash. Change it once a year regardless if you do many water crossings.

Lol, I know you just "got" the truck and have not been under it yet, so yes, go ahead and change the gaskets to the diff covers.

Buy 2 of these before you change your diff fluid though, and use them on the fill plugs instead of the plastic ones.

I think Spike meant you wanted this Brass D1 radiator plug. This replaces the plastic fill plug on the DII diff. Rova Farm is a great place to order from. I have bought a few things from them.

There are no removable diff covers on Land Rovers. Only the optional Salisbury diffs had covers.

ok so drain plugs are ok to reuse, but replace the 2 fill plugs which are apparently plastic, with 2 more new drain plugs?

I do not think you need to replace them. Unless they are bad (start leaking - which would be hard to do being the fluid does not sit above them - unless your upside down ). I usually fill my diffs/xfer cases until the new oil starts to drip out of the fill hole. Just make sure the truck is on a level surface.
