gearbox, and suspension
New to owning Disco in the US - had a 2002 disco 2 for about 4 weeks now, and have noticed a few interesting features - any ideas on these gratefully received..
1. The autobox is behaving a little oddly - it seems as if it is slipping in the lower gears (particularly when cold I think), and when changing up through the gears in normal driving switches almost immediatley from 2nd to 4th - less than a couple of seconds in 3rd gear. I can persuade it to change down to 3rd with the selector, but even then it seems to change into 2nd momentarily before it moves to third. Oh - and the "sport" setting seems to make no difference at all.....
I've had the fluid checked - and all OK - although there is a small drip / ooze from the transmission cooler.
2. The suspension is rock-hard - at least much harder than a previous disco 1 I used to own in the Uk.
It does not droop and ride height looks right and even, but i crashes oevr potholes etc much more than i think it should. Is this how it should be?

How many miles on this truck, when was the tranny last serviced, do you know how to check the tranny level and if so how does it look?
As for the suspension, does it have the rear air suspension or coils?

I had a local shop check the tranny level - box just warm, engine running etc and they said all was OK
It has 80k on the clock - maindealer serviced from new.
How would I check on the rear coils / air?
thanks

To check for coil springs or air springs look under the back of the truck, coils springs will look like coiled springs, air springs will look like black rubber air bags.
Yes that is good.
Now the stiff ride could be because of over inflated tires, heavy duty springs or thats just the way it is.
I have not driven a DII in almost a year so I do not remember how stiff the ride is supposed to be.

With your mileage, your suspension needs to be replaced, both the shocks and springs, if you want more information PM me your tel number and I will be glad to call you. The tranny should be looked at ASAP, so send me your number.
