Default Gearbox whining, not moving in any gear.

Alright so this morning I had started up my rover as per usual in the cold, let it warm up, and put it in reverse and pressed on the gas. However, my rover kinda inched back a bit and didnt move. There were no lights on whatsoever on the dash, and the parking brake was not engaged either, as its been out of use for some time. Now onto the whining. The whining has been happening for quite some time, but I always assumed it was the fan and fan pulley as they slip a little bit due to my sloppy job putting it on. However this morning when I had gotten under the car to try to see why my car wasnt moving I had discovered that the whining was coming from my gearbox, not the fan. There is no clanking or banging coming from it, just the chirping whine. I believe I need to replace the gearbox, but im on here just in case theres any other solution or im just dead wrong, as im a realtivley new owner and new to working on cars in general. If it is the gearbox, I would appreciate some reccomendations on what to replace it with, as I offroad with it a lot. Thank you in advance.

The 2 most likely issues are (I think), not enough transmission fluid (read up on how to check level), or low voltage (the transmission ecu is very picky about voltage). I wouldn’t start by replacing the transmission. They of course can fail but they are very good transmissions.

It's also possible that the transfer case is giving you trouble. I think whining noises would be more likely to be coming from there than from the autobox.

Check the tcase shifter first, make sure it was not accidentally bumped in to neutral. See if you can push the car forward or reverse while in park, parking brake off. If so, you have a damaged transfer case or axle differential. If not, check the transmission fluid level as stated above. If those are good, mostly likely the transmission needs rebuilding. Good luck
