Default Gearing up and down

Hi - question to see if this is normal...

2003 D2.

Driving up a hill (not off road) truck will take a long time before deciding to gear down to 3rd (2nd?). In the meantime, lots of speed has been lost because it's slow to respond to said downshift.

Is this normal for D2s?

When it does shift and kicks in it takes off as it should.

Just frustrating when on a hill and everyone starts catching up to you

I just did this hill 30 mins ago.

Doing 60kms (40-50mph) it will drop to about 1000-1200 before kicking in.

It will drop to about 30kms before kicking in to gear down.

To me it sounds like you may be due for a transmission fluid and screen change. Without a dipstick it's highly possible that you are low on fluid and don't know it, especially if you haven't had your transmission serviced in a while. Depending on the mileage, and the mileage since the last service, it might be worth starting there as it's relatively cheap preventative maintenance.

Yes - I agree. It's on my list to do and will be done in short order (see also new hoses and a complete coolant flush and changeover...)

Will report back when done.
