Yeah, it's just the bare block that is the "same." You'll have to use almost everything from your 4.6L to make it work, oil pan, sensors, heads (if you have SAI), timing gears, etc, etc.

But the rumor is that you'll have a block that's much better than the bosch blocks.

No, not as many head gasket problems, the heads were a better alloy and Rover did not use Dexcool in those engines so I would say that had 20% of the failures our D2's have. The sleeves were also installed with a much better addhisive so they dropped less sleeves also.

Hey, I need a block. Where are you located?

Side comment - I noticed the tabs on the flywheel from a 1999 bosch aren't the same as the cavities on the flywheel from a 1996 GEMS. Both 4.0 liter. Are the crank sensors different on these two engines?

O.K. Everything apart more or less, i snapped some pictures (kinda crappy), and here are my findings.

- THe oil pick up is different. On the bosch engine, the pickup is secured to the front cover and bolted on the center crank bearing cap. On the gems, it is bolted on the side of the crank bearing cap (not on it, but right beside it: Take a look at the pictures). Now, with that oil pickup installed, I cannot fit my bosch oil pan on; but with it removed, the pan lines up perfectly. Now, I have two problems with this.

1. Based on my knowledge, the bearing caps should not be swapped between motors. With that said, i would not be able to secure the bosch oil pickup as the cap does not have a stud. Weld a stud on there? I can do that, but just wanted to see what others have done.

2. As seen in the picture, with the gems oil pickup removed, there is that hole to where the oil runs. I'm not certain of the oil flow on this motor, but I don't think I should plug it up with a bracket......or should I?

Now, moving on to my dilemna with the knock sensors, as seen in the pictures, the sensors are completely different than those found on a bosch engine. What would i have to do to get my bosch ones on there? I cannot use the ones on the gems block as it does fit into my bosch connector on the wiring harness. I can take the harness from the gems block and cut and splice into a bosch harness, but would the ecu read it properly?

THE BLUE PLUG IS THE KNOCK SENSOR

I appreciate all the help, and hope that someone who stumbles on this thread will have all the answers if he/she wishes to take on this task.

Default Oil pickup

I noticed in the pictures above a possible fix for your oil pickup problem. If you notice the bearing cap on the left side of Picture number two, there is a threaded hole in the middle of a round seat at the center of the cap. This is the location where you can screw in the stud to connect the oil pickup for the Bosch engine. You seem to have the GEMS pickup installed in the first pic. That's my take on the picture.

PS - I'm interested in the same fix for the knock sensor on a GEMS block going into a Bosch system. I removed the GEMS sensors and there is a threaded hole with a beveled bottom. On my Bosch block it looks like there is a stud that is set in the hole but it looks like there may be a solid liner in the hole that the threaded stud meets. Hum.
