General Disco Question
I have been looking at Discos for about 2 months now and I am learning a lot by looking and also reading this forum. Can someone help me out with a couple things..
1. Are there any significant differences between a 2003 and 2004? And how do I find out if a car I am considering is in the "bad" VIN range for 2003...its #SALTL16423A819927.
2. Other than wheel size and a few other options, what is the difference between an S and an SE.
I welcome any comments. Thanks.

No significant difference between '03 and '04, if any at all (not that I'm aware of). There is no S vs. SE. Depends on the year you're looking at, but all together there is an SD, LE, SE, and HSE. Each year has three of those four designations referring to standard, medium end, and high end. The SE was the high end for the first couple years, then the HSE became the high end, knocking the SE down to the medium end. The LE was the medium end for the first couple years, then it was done away with. It might be best to focus on a particular model year.
The 2004 models have the center differential lock that's not present on the 2003, depends if you care about that or not. SD is a basic package that doesn't include leather seats, moonroofs, or upgraded speakers which are likely to be present in an SE model.

A buddy of mine is an ex Land Rover tech so I might have him check it out for me.
Can anyone help me out with the VIN and whether or not it is in the bad oil pump range?
I am not sure where to go to get that info.

Bad VINs are any of those in the 3A771801-3A808362 range. Yours appears to be JUST outside. But be careful, later vins have been known to detonate as well. I had an '03 S that developed a tick in the engine (it was out of the vin range too). Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, it was bashed by a Tahoe in a hit and run. Sold it--fully disclosing the accident and the tick-- and got an '04. The '04 has been great but I have always wondered what exactly was making the '03 tick. I never had a chance, or the will, to pull it apart and investigate. If a tick develops in the '04 I will track it down.
