Genuine grey T/Stat v Motorad 439-180
For a long time I have always used the motorad 439-180 and have been a proponent of it. I even left a review on Amazon exhorting the benefits of it. I change my T/sat every 12 months.
Last time that I changed it my temps went from 195-197 on the highy way to an average of 203.. Drat must be a faulty one so I sent it back and got another to the same effect.
I thought that I might have a partialy blocked radiator, I tend to use my disco for extream off roading and and have burried a number of times....
So I thought i would give the genuine Land Rover grey T/Stat a try and I am amazed. Really amazed....
I always use the same way to bleed the Disco, now we all have our own ways to do it so I will explain mine:
1/ park the Disco on a ramp on the passenger side
2/ remove the bleed screw from the top rad hose and lift out the expansion tank and place it on the battery cover with a brick under to keep it level
3/ fil the expansion tank until a steady flow is coming from the bleed screw and with it still flowing tighten the bleed screw
4/ turn the heat on full and on high and now start the disco.
5/ a quick check to make sure that every thing is tight
6/ gently rev the disco to 3k revs and hold it there for 5 minutes. temps steady at 185
7 with the motor running place the cap on the tank and set it into its normal position.
Job done.
The effects of the Grey t/stat amazed me, the picture shwoing 194 is with it idling with the AC on for 10 minutes.
I would now not hesitate to recommend replacing the motorad one for the genuine one

I had the same success results when I switched from Motorad. I try and tell anyone that will listen that the Motorad is crap compared to Genuine Grey 180, but the motorad is still way better than a stock T-Stat.
All the stock T-Stats in the world should be gathered up and set on fire so they can never destroy another Disco.
