Default Getting My D2 Painted

A few weeks ago, I noticed that the clear coat on the hood and the roof of my D2 is beginning to go bad. My indy mechanic had his vinyl wrapped, so I was considering that. But then I thought that it is kind of a band-aid fix because you are literally covering a problem. And I just didn't like the look either. So I have decided to get the roof and hood repainted with the factory Java Black paint. So my question is this: have any of you gotten your LR repainted? If so, was it by anyone in the SF Bay Area? Right now, I am thinking of getting MAACO to do the job (because they are cheap), but I'm not sure if that's the best idea because they have mixed reviews.

Maaco has painted plenty of my company cars and the paint had lasted 7 years so far on the oldest one. They have different levels of paint you can go with. Not a bad idea for a 12 year old vehicle

Well that is definitely good to hear. I am pretty sure I am gonna go with their platinum package because of the extra clear coats (I don't want the paint to peel again).

and here I was just going to go with the redneck version:

won't this work?

Let us know how it goes (and if you don't mind, ball park estimate?) - Bertha needs to get into the body shop for a little TLC this year.

Good luck!

Haha I almost did that fix the other day! But my hood has a dent in it so I am hoping Maaco can pull that out before they paint it. I am going there tomorrow for a quote for the hood and roof. I will report back with the estimate.

It's possible that the hood will look completely different from the remaining body panels and doors. I would get MAaco to maybe do the roof and then buy a used hood in Java that doesn't need any work. That is if you are super particular. It takes a very, very experienced paint tech to make and blend the paints, thinners & clear to match with a 15 year old factory paint job. Just because the paint code is Java black does not mean that will match what your truck currently looks like. There is a tremendous amount of mixtures, along with timing that makes a final product appear a certain way. A regular old painter could be a dime-dozen but a GOOD one is far-few between and so highly regarded and demanded that they would never work for MAaco per ethics/morals code.

I was concerned about that as well. I mentioned it to the guy at MAACO over the phone and he said that they add tints in the paint to match the rest of the truck. Now, I don't know for sure if they actually do that but at least he said that they do.

About buying another hood: I have been considering this one for the past year, ever since the paint quality started to go south. And I almost did buy one from a junkyard abot a month ago. That was from an 03 and was showing the early signs of fade. It would be the best color match for sure, but I am afraid that the same thing would happen to the second hood. I would rather have a color match that is a little off than clear coat fade all over again. JMHO.

Anyway, I will look at some of their partially painted cars and trucks tomorrow to see how well they color matched. I will try to post some pictures.

I have the same clear coat problem on the roof in front of the front sunroof and I'd like to get the hood painted too. A top-line body shop here said they would do the job only if the roof rails and the Alpine windows are removed. That's because there is no hard line against which to mask and since that shop takes its warranty very seriously they'd otherwise be concerned about the paint peeling at those points.

Some Maaco shops can likely do good work, but as you've learned they offer different levels of service, from el-cheapo paint jobs (Paint your entire car for $300!!!) to relatively high-end work. I'm confident Maaco would paint a DII without removing the roof rails and windows.

On another Rover forum a user posted a few weeks ago about painting his DII. When I asked him about the Alpine windows he replied that they carefully cut back the adhesive/sealant before painting and then applied a bead of new sealant after painting to cover the paint edge. He removed the headliner to get to the roof rails (linked below).

Like you said, Maaco would probably just mask over the roof rails and alpine windows. I doubt they would remove them because they try to keep cost down. If they did, that would kind of suck because I just removed and painted my headliner a few weeks ago. But it is just a respray so little details like that can be forgiven because they aren't really noticeable. If I was doing a color change, they would take everything off the truck.

Well, I couldn't go to Maaco today for an estimate... (Life happens).

I will try to go later this week and will post the estimate that I'm given.
