Going to Mobil 1 Sould I flush?
Hello All,
Going to change the oil in my 2000 LR DII this weekend. Wanted to switch from dino juice to Mobil 1 full synthetic. Should I flush my motor with a quart of atf prior to change? Does it matter?
The motor has about 29xxx miles on it, so it is pretty new, thats why I'am not certain if a flush would be necessary. And yes those are actual miles, the motor came out of a totalled DII (rest its soul), but its heart lives on!
Also, going to go with 5w-30 as the temp around this time of year ranges from 0F to 50F, 50on a very rare day. Gotta wait till late March for the ambient to get above 50.
As always, suggestions are appreciated.
Regards,
Nick

well, many thoughts. first, you don't just flush with 1 quart of ATF, you drain the oil and fill with ATF and idle.
Second, it is a good idea to run conventional oil for about 500 to 1K right after the flush just to clean out any residual ATF that might have been trapped in the oil cooler, etc... Third, you don't need to flush just because you are changing to synthetic. Over time, the detergents in synthetics will clean your engine on their own.
being as it isn't your motor from new, it wouldn't hurt to flush and then change over. That's just if you want to do it, not really necessary at that mileage.

With 29K on the motor, there is no risk in disturbing that engine. Switch to Mobil 1 at your leisure. No need to flush, IMHO.
I'm not a fan of putting anything in an engine but properly engineered motor oil and keeping it changed every 5K. As okdiscoguy says, the detergents in Mobil 1 will help clean any residues up and keep it that way.
Been running Mobil 1 in my Rodeo since new. After 130,000 miles, you could eat off the valvetrain it's so clean under the valve covers.

If you flush at all, use one of the 1 quart engine flushes, just add it to you oil, let idle for 5 to 10 minutes and drain. You will like the Monil 1, make sure you use a good oil filter like a Mobil 1 or a K&N 3001 and don't go longer then 5000 miles on your oil changes.
Thanks for your input guys. Think I will skip the flush and perform a standard oil change and switch to Mobil 1.
Now if I could just increase that 14mpg...

Did the Mobil 1 oil and filter change over the weekend without the flush. WOW! The engine was smooth before, now it is silky smooth
The oil is so clean in the motor I have a hard time reading it on the dipstick. And yes I put 6 quarts in.
I noticed alot of folks suggesting Mobil 1 oil filters but never post the number.
So here it is: M1-204 (this is for a 4.0L DII)
Maybe save someone some time.
BTW Walmart carries the filter ($9.10), made life easy.

I am glad you mentioned the filter number for the Mobil 1, I have been suggesting the K&N 3001 or the Mobil 1 but didn't know the larger filters number. How would you compare the two?
One thing that wasn't mentioned is that if you switch from one synthetic to another you should run mineral in between or ATF in between because not every synthetic base is compatable.

the mobile 1 m1-301 filter works too. its the "long" size

I'll have to check this out. I use K&N over M1 because of it's larger capacity. M1 is a bit less expensive though, so if it's big enough I may switch.
