Default Good Advanced Auto Oil Special

So advanced auto has a deal when you buy 5 quarts of Castrol Syntec and a PureOne filter it is $24. I picked up a PL30001 filter and the 5W-40. You can also get the 5 quarts of the syntec edge and get a $15 rebate making it a smoking deal. Unfortunately they only had edge 5w-30 and 5w-20. I don't usually use syntec but figured what the heck any 5w-40 synthetic is a good tough oil especially for our trucks in the winter. Also the PureOne filter is a very good quality filter with a silicon ADV and synthetic media (like the mobil 1 filters).

Castrol Edge only comes in those 2 weights right now but there are more on the way.

I have been thinking hard about going back to Castrol, I used it in my first car and up until the Rover I have always used it.
Bought a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero brand new, first old change at 5,000 miles, Castrol Syntec 20w-50 every 5k and at 100k looking inside the valve cover through the oil fill cap the engine still looked brand new, everything was still just as shiny as the day I bought it.

schucks locally had a special 5qts of mobil 1 (i use 10/40 migh mileage) + mobil filter for $29. i added a qt of hyperlube to the mix since i have been using that stuff in my vehicles for years. heck of a deal,,,

i would be curious to see the results of castrol edge if they do a 10/40 HM oil.

Yeah Autozone has that special every so often and I get my 15w-50 mobil 1 at those times. I went in to buy a PureOne filter. Note to self: stay out of auto stores (I have enough oil for the next couple years for both my vehicles). The only thing I don't like about castrol syntec is that the Zinc and Phosphorus levels are on the low side when compared to mobil 1 (especially the EP and HM flavors).

When the PepBoys in my area went out of business I bought out the last of their Mobil 1 15w-50 and Purolator oil filters.
I was covered for 4 oil changes and it cost me less than $50.

Castrol Syntec 20w-50 has the most zinc of any motor oil.
It is specifically designed for classic cars with flat tappet engines just like ours.

Yeah the syntec 20w-50 is a good stout oil. I've have not had the guts to try it though as it is a bit thick for my tastes. The thickest I will go is the mobil 1 15w-50. It is thin for a 50w and could almost be a 40w. It also has pretty high zddp concentration (1300 ppm Zn and 1200 ppm P) and is a true synthetic like the castrol.

The only reason I stopped using the 20w-50 was because my Wal-Mart stopped selling it.
But now that I know I can get it at Advance Auto I will start using it again next summer and use the 5w-50 in the winter.
My next oil change I am going to use the $5 gallon of Penzzoil Platinum 5w-30 that I bought when it was on sale at Wal-Mart.
That will get me through most of the winter.

last time i checked, my wal-mart didnt have the rotella 5w-40 syn, which is what i've decided to run. i'm figuring they no longer carry it.

advanced auto has the rotella, but more $$ than the mobil 1.

That is one of the things you need to consider when you choose a oil to use, can you get it easily and can you afford it?
You dont want to be driving all over town trying to get motor oil.

Rotella (both syn and dino) is great for our trucks but you can't really go wrong with mobil 1. Just make sure you get the high mileage or extended protection versions of the oil as they have the higher levels of additives. Also the 0w-40 and 15w-50 are the stoutest of the mobil 1 gasoline engine oils. Mobil 1 also makes a 5w-40 HDEO (heavy duty engine oil) similar to the Rotella and if you can find that it is good stuff too.

Also once you switch to synthetic oil don't be afraid to try different brands. You can save tons of money by being flexible.
