Default Good ol' front Drive Shaft!!!

So, I DID IT! That's right, I rebuilt my own drive shaft.. Not only is this my first disco, but this is my first 4X4 vehicle.. I'm not looking for praise, but what I did want to tell you all out there is that it CAN be done...

Trust me, if I can do it, you can do it. I only spent about $55 on parts so I saved about 3 full tanks of gas if you want to look at it that way.

Just though I would share that with you.

Have a good weekend,

Make sure you keep them lubed at each oil change now.

Congrats Shane! Would you mind sharing the part numbers/manufacturer info with all? Thanks,

That's awesome. You said it's your first 4X4, but have you worked on other cars much?

Simple stuff on my Porsche from time to time, brakes, spark plugs, wires, that sort of thing, but never anything this involved!

thanks,

Default Congrats

Shane,

Congratulations on your achievement with the Disco. I also am on my first Disco, although it is my 5th four wheeler. I too have just completed my first major maintenace on my 97 DI, replace front and rear brakes, more involved than any vehicle I have had yet.

I had a 86.5 Porsche 928 with the 32 valve V8. It was a nightmare to do anything on. The Discovery is a pleasure to work on compared to any of the previous ones I've owned until you get back to the American 50's- 60's vehicles.

I've owned a 78 Dodge RamCharger 360, 96 Ford Bronco 351, 99 Explorer 302 that really was a dog, and a 96 Pathfinder that was almost rotted away when I got it. The Ram and Broco were badasses, but I think the Disco is better than any so far.

Good work. It's not all that hard but some people have a very hard time getting the old centering ball out. I think we got lucky.

Certainly a place to get a u-joint, but nearly 3x what you really need to spend for one.
Search here for propshaft rebuild.

I know that I'll get blasted for saying this, but for all the things that I have done to my truck, I wish that I would have never messed with the front driveshaft. I rebuilt it two weeks ago . At the time of the rebuild, I had zero vibration and things were as smooth as a brand new car with the original shaft. After the rebuild, vibration over 50 mph and just not as smooth at all! Took it this week to reputable shop and had it 'balanced'. Slightly better, but still shakes over 70 mph. One might ask, "we'll would you rather buy a new tranny and cats?" I would have to say now that I was much happier risking things by keeping the original shaft untouched. I almost dont like to drive the truck anymore with the new vibration feel. I want my old , original , un-rebuilt shaft back. :-)
