Default goodbye scout hello disco...

some on the binder bulletin might disagree, but i feel i've upgraded from my 80' scout II diesel. (although down graded on the mpg's)

so lets see, any advice? i've been looking some discos around town and been reading some of the post here, and i think i made a good decision with the 97'

118,000 miles, a little faded and scratched on the exterior, some dash lights out. (and the radio reads "code" on the dial) but the engine is in good shape, no leaks after the test drive. i'll do an engine flush this weekend and go through the other required maint.

the scout is for sale if anybody is interested

Quite a rare truck. I believe that engine is a Nissan SD33. Turbocharged or non? A lady in town has one turbo/5 speed and mint. What a tank! Dodge offered the turbo motor for '79 only, pretty weak for a full size truck.

Welcome, Jason!

I think you upgraded too, but I do like the old Scouts!

I've been driving land rovers for 35 years and I'd take a diesel Scout over a Disco any day of the week. Well, except maybe a 300Tdi Disco, but certainly over a NAS Disco.

That Scout is rare. I think they made about 100hp but the Nissan Diesel with the mechanical fuel injection is quite durable. If possible, hang onto it for a parts runner when the Disco is acting up
Where are you located, what shape is the Scout in (mileage, options, etc) and how much are you asking?

the scout is a completely different beast. much better than the jeep as far as styling and off road out of the box utility. but i do think land rover got that market right with the defender 80. (however in la i dont see spending $30,000 for a used one with a salvaged title..)

the diesel is still a dog. only 80hp with the turbo. if i had a garage i'd prolly keep it. but for now only the disco will do.

but stu, if you are interested...
im in los angeles, the scout is in pretty good shape. no rust really, but no top either (i got rid of that last year when i couldn't store it in the summer) it has a bikini top and i cover it when it rains
140,000 miles.
4 speed, dana 60 and all that vibe
interior is org and in real good shape
it could use a paint job
also pesky drip from the injector pump... this is this biggest thing that needs to be fixed. it could be a retourque or a replacement with a new / rebuilt pump from jesco.
it's been my daily driver till yesterday
asking $3200 (i paid 6500 for it 3 years ago)

I'd go with the scout anyday. I grew up with them and learned to drive and work on them. My dad had the diesel for a while, that was a cool truck. Scout's around here love to rust though, I wish you were on the east coast. Sounds like you got a good truck, call up a dealer with the vin# to get the code for the radio if you can't find it in the manual.

To fix the CODE on the stereo, call your local Land Rover Dealership and give them the VIN # of the truck, they will email that to Land Rover of North America and give the dealership the code, they can in turn give it to you.. They might want to see the Title, they might not. I had to do this and managed to do it all over the phone.

You might get lucky and find the number written down in the Owners Manual..
