I think I would agree with Ed and the rest of the guys. Buy the parts, download the RAVE. PRINT ALL THE PAGES INVOLVED. TREAT THAT LIKE A WORK ORDER. YOU CAN READ AND COMPREHEND CAN'T YOU.

If not maybe your girlfriend can do it for you or has another friend...........

If you keep on driving and hoping the problem will go away, you will merely have more to fix sooner or later. If it is just gaskets now, do it now. If the heads need rework, find a competent automotive machine shop to do that portion of the work.

Be careful dealing with your girlfriend's "friends"............... Just my personal opinion there.

FWIW, I've had stop leak in mine for over 2 years, eliminating a leak at the rear of the pass side head.

It was/is temporary, as eventually I'll get around to freshening the motor.

luck,greg

If you know you have a head gasket problem, the longer you put off repairing it correctly leads you closer to a possible cracked head or worse yet - a cracked block. Don't flirt with that kind of fate. If you're not up for doing it yourself, a good indie shop should cost you ~ $1500 P&L, including the cost for a machine shop cleaning up your heads.

Hey guys,
I would love to do the head gaskets myself except I lack the time and space to do so (I live in the city). I plan on getting the heads done but this is my only car and it would be hard to not have it for a few days. Anywho, I managed to shop vac out a significant portion of the Bar's Leak from the Expansion Tank (the idiot didnt even put it in the upper radiator hose like you are supposed to) and as luck would have it, the little bit that was left in there seems to be holding up its end of the bargain (no leaks). Now I know I'm going to get bashed for saying this but I'm going to probably give it a shot and see if she holds for a while. Hey Ive been meaning to upgrade to an 04 anyway so whats the harm.

Just as a side note to this situation ..... I actually had both head gaskets replaced by the dealer at 70,000 miles. I guess these things a routine maintenance for our trucks.

I really don't know what the answer is; some say certain coolants are corrosive enough to cause gasket failure while others say the gasket material is suspect. The subject of engine design and all its nooks and crannies that harbor air pockets comes in to play as well. After owning and maintaining vehicles for 45 years now, this has been the only brand that has given me this kind of trouble, so my best recommendation is to be diligent on maintenance, on chasing every little symptom you hear or see: air bubbles/water fall sound in the heater coil, constant minor level fluctuation in coolant, monitoring temperature etc. and when you do replace anything use the best available after you have thoroughly researched the item.

Get it fixed right if you intend to sell it and upgrade. Dont dump that thing on some poor unsuspecting new idiot. A 04 isn't going to be nessessarlly any better. My daughters 2000 DII drives better, quieter even with a exhaust leak, quicker than my 04. The 99 had much better engine tolerances than the 04 did...Fact.....the truck in general is a nice POS...You neeed to emotionally disconnect that it is something else. If you have the money and want to 4X4.... get a defender....Hey, i like mine...but thats it...i accept thats it's a walking hand grenade...Its basicly a time and money pit with no end... and to boot..look at the oil spill in the gulf....Yea, i feel great trying to keep a POS truck going that gets 15 miles to the gallon..i feel pretty guilty actually as i am art of the problem..

what city do you live in? you can always rent space at a garage or get a helping hand at a garage at a discounted labor rate.

Okay Im leaking I have white smoke coming out tail pipe now, not much just does it at start up. I know I need a head gasket job but do not have time to do it right now. Im looking for a temp fix so I came across K-seal and read some really good reviews on it. (Atlantic British sells it for 14.95 plus shipping which comes to like $26.00 I just bought a bottle off ebay for $14.00 shipped) I am wondering if anyone has used it. I know these types of temporary fixes are just temporary but thats all I need. Please let me know if you have used this and if it worked.

Thanks,
Aaron
