I have an 03 Disco that makes a groaning noise when I turn upon startup. From what I have found on the web it is probably the shroud on the steering column. Has anyone seen a thread where the fix is shown!! Only way I can do repairs is step by step or pics as I am not a mechanic!! Also what would be the proper lube to use for the shround?

 

Have you definitely isolated the noise to the shroud? I'm not sure what conditions you're hearing it during, but I'm having possibly a similar issue. I can hear a groan when I cut the wheel all the way to the left, and only when I'm moving. Turning to the right I don't hear anything. Also, when I'm stationary I can lock out to the left and not hear a single thing.

 

FWIW, my 01 has made that sound upon turning at startup for years. Personally, I wouldn't spend any time tracking it down (I haven't had any problems yet), but I am curious if you find out what it is.

 

Actually I only hear the noise when I start up and make the initial turn of the wheel. I'm not 100% sure it is the shroud but from the small amount of research I have done it is the most likely cause. I can feel the vibration through the wheel and it sounds and feels like the cause. If you are hearing the noise at the extreme it may be a different issue because my noise only happens when I initiate a turn to either side.

 

Ah, gotcha. Definitely not the same issue then. Mine is only when the wheels are moving and cut to left.

 

Sort of like a non working wife asking you more money for expenses.

Will groan upon rapid turn when cold.
That's just how it is.

I replaced the power steering pump and the fluid.

To cure it - you will need to replace the steering box.

In the big picture of life "who cares"?

It groans when cold - well, that's life.

 

I guess I should treat it like the wife and ignore her when she groans!

 

How many miles on the truck, when did you last flush the steering system?
Might want to start with a steering flush and free up your valving.
By the bay the noise is not because of the fan shroud.

 

I had a loud groaning noise when I turned the wheels after starting up a few months back. I drained all the power steering fluid and refilled with Lucas power steering fluid and I haven't had it groan again in the last 10,000 miles.

 

Going to pick up some pow steering fluid tomorrow and do a flush (inbetween football games!!!), I will report back in a few days.
