Well I don't get to laugh too much at the situation, but whatever. Tonight my girlfriend was driving because I had a few beers. We were driving down the street and as she turned this horrid metal clunking noise happened. Great, front diff/driveshaft area. She pulled into the mobil across the street so I could check it out. She got out of the truck before I did and said, "it's leaking!". I was like, obviously, it's a land rover. I got out, sure enough it was GUSHING fluid like a boss from the front diff. Looked to be a hole in the front of the pumpkin. Was going to yank the front drive shaft but the only socket set up I had wasn't able to undo the front nuts because of the X-member. Had it towed to work and will deal with it tomorrow.

Bottom line, if you go off road, INSTALL THE DIFF GUARD!!!

Haha I'm not sure RN will have much to do with this. This might have been the kick in the rear I needed to install front and rear air lockers. We shall see..

At least your front prop shaft wasn't involved. Thank goodness. We don't need another 10+ page post.

Regarding the leak, how long ago were you off road? Did the diff just start leaking or was it alreday leaking and something let go to finish the thing off? Just wondering how the horrid noise and the leak are related.

Well the leak is literally a hole in the front of the pumpkin. I went off roading at around 2.30-5 today. I'm guessing I slipped into a rut and onto a rock. There were some tight spots!
I wanted to remove the prop shaft and lock the center diff and drive home, but the socket setup I had with me wouldn't allow me to.

I may be wrong, but the gears would still be turning with the propshaft off, so you could have still fried the gears on the way home. The sled ride was probably your best bet.

'Agreed. The gears would have locked up, not a fun situation.

You and the wifey got a free romantic 'winter wonderland' sleigh ride home!

This happened after trying to climb a steep snowy slope, with a lot of wheel spin. That's why he suggested that.
