Has anyone tried cutting the leather off a D2 steering wheel, when it wears through?

So, is that wheelskins cover over top of the original leather or over top of the bare wheel once the original was removed? The original one is pretty thick and I was thinking a new cover might make it REALLY thick, especially for my wife who has small hands......

I still have my 2 Paracord wrapped D2 wheels. One is in the 99 D2 and the other is in my 04. Both holding up well and I did mine a bit differently. I cut the upper brown sections completely out, then wrapped with paracord for a lower profile aka thinner steering wheel. I then poured hot water over the paracord and it shrunk and made it nice and tight.
