Default Head Gasket

I took my 2003 Land Rover Dicovery to the mechanic saturday because it was licking antifreeze, they told me that the Head Gasket needed to be replaced. Is anyone having this problem? I thought these vehicles were reliable, I don't think so anymore. In October 2008 I had to replace the power Steering Pump for about $1200. thanks

How many miles on your truck?
Leaking head gaskets are probally the most common repair for a DII.
When was the last time you had your coolant flushed? If you were to read your owners manual it states more than once that Land Rover recommends you change your coolant every 45,000 miles or 36 months, whichever is sooner.
I recommend every 2 years no matter what.
DexCool becomes corrosive IF it is not properly maintained, and that is what came in your truck from the factory.
LR's are VERY reliable when properly maintained.
You are looking at $1500 for new headgaskets, both side for this price, and make sure that you do both sides not just one.
And make sure that you DO NOT overheat the engine or you WILL be buying a new one.

Well, it obvious that you have never read any posts regarding Rovers and their issues, head gaskets are at the top of the list then the front drive shaft.
How many miles on your truck and what was the estimate they gave you?

Is it just the D2 that has the head gasket issue? And which engine... 4.0 or 4.6? Just curious... If i ever find a "deal" on a D2, I'll add it to the list of things to look for.

All 3.9's, 4.0's and 4.6's have had some problems, it is all the same engine and even with Rovers attempts to correct it they never did.

So you're saying that with the miles that I have, I shouldn't be surprised if someday I have a coolant problem?? Guess I'll start putting $$$ into my Disco Repair Jar.....

Looking at the discovery engine... it looks like it doesn't take much to get the heads off relative to other cars... I'd bet you could do it yourself

When you first start your engine, run back and smell the exhaust, if it smells sweet, you ar in trouble, if it doesn't then you have normal condensation burn off.
