Default Head Gasket

How common is a blown head gasket on a 2000 DII with 82,000miles. I have been reading conflicting opinions, some say very common, some say very rare.

Who do I believe ?

My mechanic says mine is gone, coolant pissing out everywhere at rear of engine. This mechanic has been highly recommended to me by numerous Land Rover owners on the boards.

Any thoughts.[/align]

Can be very common the Disco One, Mine went out at 75k. They changed a problem with the head gasket torque design. The old design caused it to prematurely warp. So head gasket problems on a D2 are not common at all.

by the way.... I now have a Disco 2 engine- can you belive the dealer actually swapped a diso one motor with a disco 2 engine with 4000 miles on it for 4 grand... not a bad deal at all if you ask me...

Roger,
Hate to correct you but I talk with 3 or 4 people a week with D2's that have lost their head gaskets, believ me it is very common, Hell my 99 D2 need them as I type this to you.

Same reason it was common for all Rover V-8's, this is an old 1961 Buick alloy engine that Rover never attempted to fix.

Looks like you're right, as always Mike

Started talking to LR about the issue and they apparently still occasionaly go out, I thought this was a problem that they fixed with a new gasket material and torque sequence. Looks like the people I talked to may have had a bit too much Guinness to drink [sm=icon_guiness.gif]! Looks like what they were talking about was some sort of Aftermarket fix from and indipendent shop... Mike have your heard anything about this or rumors associated??
