Exclamation Head Gasket Repair

I have a 2001 DISCO II. It has 100,000 miles. I have replaced pretty much everything in the coolant system. Now i have a bad head gasket. At least thats what the mechanic has told me. I can see water spray out from around the bolts when the truck is running. I live in Montgomery Alabama and the closest Land Rover dealer is about 80 miles away. Anyway the mechanics in town are saying its going to be about $3,000 to replace the head gasket. they all say it would be cheaper to replace the engine. My question is would it be better to replace the engine or go ahead and do the gasket replacement? It is a good strong running engine in the Rover already. I can do the work myself if I had to but i dont really have the time or the place to do it. Plus it would take me a long time. what in your opinion is a good resonable price to replace the head gasket?

$3,000 is a bit steep, but not too far. Around here (Reno, NV) head gasket repairs are about $1,500 - $2,000. I don't think replacing the engine would be cheaper. Head gaskets are a do-able job on your own. About $200 in parts, not including getting the heads milled.

I suspect you are talking amout T** Wi****** Land Rover-Jag-BMW-Lexus-Chrysler-Buick-Dodge-yada-yada outside Birmingham. Was by there today looking for a clock bulb.. their price $14.35 and not in stock. I passed and went to the BMW parts next door. No joy there either. Moral to the story.. I suspect $3000 won't buy a HG job there. Better off at a good local shop you trust. Wish I could help you, I have shop at my house, but not enough time to work on my own broke down junk cars.

He can't...as stated, "No time/no location".

Recommend you as for help on the forum. Someone who has the time/location/experience & is within a reasonable distance may be willing to help over a weekend. Not sure what it'll cost you but likely somewhere between $0 & half of what you're being quoted.
